From one of the most innovative and acclaimed biblical commentators at work today, here is a revolutionary analysis of the intersection between religion and psychoanalysis in the stories of the men and women of the Bible. For centuries scholars and rabbis have wrestled with the biblical narrative, attempting to answer the questions that arise from a plain reading of the text. In The Murmuring Deep, Avivah Zornberg informs her literary analysis of the text with concepts drawn from Freud, Winnicott, Laplanche, and other psychoanalytic thinkers to give us a new understanding of the desires and motivations of the men and women whose stories form the basis of the Bible. Through close readings of the biblical and midrashic texts, Zornberg makes a powerful argument for the idea that the creators of the midrashic commentary, the medieval rabbinic commentators, and the Hassidic commentators were themselves on some level aware of the complex interplay between conscious and unconscious levels of experience and used this knowledge in their interpretations. In her analysis of the stories of Adam and Eve, Noah, Jonah, Abraham, Rebecca, Isaac, Joseph and his brothers, Ruth, and Esther–how they communicated with the world around them, with God, and with the various parts of their selves–Zornberg offers fascinating insights into the interaction between consciousness and unconsciousness. In discussing why God has to “seduce” Adam into entering the Garden of Eden or why Jonah thinks he can hide from God by getting on a ship, Zornberg enhances our appreciation of the Bible as the foundational text in our quest to understand what it means to be human.

R E M S Murmur written by J. Niimi and has been published by A&C Black this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005-04-28 with Music categories.

R.E.M.'s debut album, released in 1983, was so far removed from the prevailing trends of American popular music that it still sounds miraculous and out of time today. J. Niimi tells the story of the album's genesis - with fascinating input from Don Dixon and Mitch Easter. He also investigates Michael Stipe's hypnotic, mysterious lyrics, and makes the case for Murmur as a work of Southern Gothic art. EXCEPRT: In the course of an interview that took place some twenty years ago, Michael Stipe made passing reference to an essay that had a deep impact on him. It's what came to his mind when, after having been harangued by fans and journalists alike about Murmur's lyrics, already grown weary from having to continually entertain their broad speculations, he finally threw up his hands. "Anyone who really wants to figure out the words to our songs should probably read this essay, then go back and listen," Stipe told the interviewer. "It talks about how people misinterpret something that's being said, and come up with a little phrase or word that actually defines the essence of what the original was better than the original did." What Stipe was trying to say is that if you want answers to R.E.M., you're not only looking in the wrong place, you're also asking the wrong questions.

The Intriguing and Fresh Material Brought to Light in These Essays on Malcolm Lowry is sure to stimulate discussion and debate. With the publication of Under the Volcano, Lowry became a cult hero in literary circles on both sides of the Atlantic. This fascinating collection explores the life of the man -- including memoirs by people Lowry knew at important stages of his life -- and offers critical insight into his writings, including novels, poetry, and letters, three written when he was a schoolboy and undergraduate and two that he wrote in the last months of his troubled life. The essays in A Darkness that Murmured focus on a variety of issues: the literary manifestations of Lowry's tortured sexuality; notions of 'degeneracy' and 'degeneration' using contemporary theories of Havelock Ellis's; Lowry's travel fiction as the expression of 'intellectual migration' across class barriers; 'anxiety of influence' and the critical problem of Lowry's plagiarism. These essays, while diverse in approach and content, hang together remarkably well -- this is not only a collection of excellent essays but an excellent collection of essays. An essential addition to Lowry studies, this volume will captivate Lowry specialists and general readers alike.

In The Murmuring Trees delves into nature, mythology and fantasy through evocative prose and poetry, taking readers to a time and place where myths were real and legends walked amongst men. It retells classic stories of gods and monsters, and mans place within natures grandeur, capturing the essence of these timeless tales while instilling in them a modern twist unique to R. Tirrell Leonard Jr. "Imaginative poems and prose of great spirit, rich creativity, and three-dimensional imagery." The Columbia Review. In The Murmuring Trees (2012) Reviewed By: The Editorial Board The Editorial Board of The Columbia Review selects new books and films of interest, as well as paid submissions and sponsored reviews from authors, publishers, directors, agents and producers. In The Murmuring Trees by R. Tirrell Leonard JR. is an imaginative volume of poems and prose of great spirit, rich creativity, and three-dimensional imagery. Readers of poetry often seek to understand not only the meaning of the words themselves, but to perceive who the poet really is. One might speculate that Leonard may be revealing himself best with the first line in the poem A Post in Furies Winds: I know I differ from the normal view This collection of poems and prose is also a unique exploration of a common sentiment love but here it is to a place, as the title of another song reads: A Magical Country Dance. One cannot miss Mr. Leonards deep love for the State of Massachusetts both its people (Contemporary and natives) and its raw physical beauty (land and coast). Most of the pieces may fit on one page, but many would serve as food for thought for a whole evening. And while the poet speaks of losing his voice, his writing comes across loud and clear with great charm and natural rythm. Adding to this volumes value for the reader are snippets of true perception and tickling humor. For example, who among us, lovers of poetry, dont remember a sleepless night made longer by the crickets singing through the open window, driving us near the brink. In particular, some of Mr. Leonards poetry attains the cloak of youthful wit, alluding to figures from the sphere of fantasy and the world of magic, which would make much of this volume easily accessible and happily enjoyable for younger readers, as well. In summary, this meticulous and beautiful collection leaves the reader shaken, elated and reflective, perhaps as the poet concludes the title poem (or close to it), In Murmurings Through Trees: Skies with lightning flashes bright and brawling, fill my mind with wonders still and installing. Indeed!

The Murmuring Coast written by Lídia Jorge and has been published by U of Minnesota Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1995 with Literary Criticism categories.

This captivating tale is told in two parts. The first presents Lidia Jorge's version of a traditional story about a series of supposed incidents set in Beira, Mozambique. The events take place in the final years of Portugal's colonial African wars as an undisclosed narrator describes the military wedding of a young Portuguese ensign and an equally young bride. The wedding is followed by the mass poisoning of hundreds of native Africans and the arrival of a rain of locusts. The story ends grimly with the groom's suicide. Evita Lopo, the unnamed bride from the first part, narrates the remainder of the story. Twenty years have gone by and she reviews the past and questions the unidentified narrator's rendering of events in the first section. Evita's reminiscences destroy the credibility of the earlier story, and she supplies the reader with a great deal of information that the author of the previous account had suppressed or to which he or she merely alluded. It becomes apparent that betrayal and guilt have motivated all of the characters' actions.

John Healy, born in Ireland, first arrived in Argentina at the age of twenty seven as a Catholic missionary priest. This intimate book relates his personal story from early childhood in the picturesque town of Westport to the present day in the city of Córdoba, Argentina. The intervening years are witness to many changes of location and lifestyle both in Ireland and Argentina. The most challenging and profound change occurred when he decided to retire from active priestly ministry after twenty five years. How much did those friendly letters from María, his future wife, unintentionally awaken the need to visit other dimensions of life still unexplored. This is a journey, profound it its simplicity, that leaves the reader with a feeling of gratitude to life through anecdotes and pauses for reflection.
