How humanity brought about the climate crisis by departing from its evolutionary trajectory 15,000 years ago—and how we can use evolutionary principles to save ourselves from the worst outcomes. Despite efforts to sustain civilization, humanity faces existential threats from overpopulation, globalized trade and travel, urbanization, and global climate change. In A Darwinian Survival Guide, Daniel Brooks and Salvatore Agosta offer a novel—and hopeful—perspective on how to meet these tremendous challenges by changing the discourse from sustainability to survival. Darwinian evolution, the world’s only theory of survival, is the means by which the biosphere has persisted and renewed itself following past environmental perturbations, and it has never failed, they explain. Even in the aftermath of mass extinctions, enough survivors remain with the potential to produce a new diversified biosphere. Drawing on their expertise as field biologists, Brooks and Agosta trace the evolutionary path from the early days of humans through the Late Pleistocene and the beginning of the Anthropocene all the way to the Great Acceleration of technological humanity around 1950, demonstrating how our creative capacities have allowed humanity to survive. However, constant conflict without resolution has made the Anthropocene not only unsustainable, but unsurvivable. Guided by the four laws of biotics, the authors explain how humanity should interact with the rest of the biosphere and with each other in accordance with Darwinian principles. They reveal a middle ground between apocalypse and utopia, with two options: alter our behavior now at great expense and extend civilization or fail to act and rebuild in accordance with those same principles. If we take the latter, then our immediate goal ought to focus on preserving as many of humanity’s positive achievements—from high technology to high art—as possible to shorten the time needed to rebuild.

The fundamental assumption behind the volume is that the current civilizational crisis, manifested in such phenomena as climate change, environmental catastrophes, pandemics and wars, puts into question the biopolitical means of optimizing the life of populations and individuals. To narrow down the thematic concerns of the volume, the chapters are centered around the notion of body, fundamental for the majority of theoretical takes on biopolitics. The volume shows that in the current age of catastrophes bodies are not only shaped and individualized through procedures of institutionalized discipline, but by an entanglement of environmental and planetary factors, typically omitted in extant accounts of biopolitics. The chapters go beyond biopolitics, because they show bodies as sites of operation of non-human or more-than-human agencies that work on scales inaccessible to human sensorium.

Schools and universities educate (mostly young) people, to equip them to deal with the future as it unfolds from the present. The question — whether these schools and universities are fit for that purpose — has always been relevant, even in slow-paced times of relative stability, where the future seems predictable as a simple extension of the past. Now that the future is not predictable anymore. Slow-paced times have gone. The relative stability in which universities developed and educated successive generations is gone. The question whether universities are fit for purpose is now more relevant than ever.In this book, ten leading thinkers and eighteen students from different continents, countries and cultures present their views on futures of universities and whether present-day universities are fit for purpose. It is an exploration, meant to inform, inspire and crystallize discussions.

The Economic Decline Of The West written by Wim Naudé and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2025-03-21 with Political Science categories.
This book argues that the West is in economic decline due to three interrelated factors, described as the Guns-Oil-Oligarchy nexus. It explains how the rise of the West as the world's current hegemon has resulted in an ecological overshoot, the rise of neoliberalism and its slash-and-burn model of continuous growth, extraction, expansion and conquest. With this model pushing against planetary boundaries, threatening ecological disaster, and depleting many resources the Guns-Oil-Oligarchy nexus has deepened its stranglehold on society. This book then dissects the Guns-Oil-Oligarchy nexus. First it describes who the Oligarchs are and how they expand and consolidate their power and influence, and stifle innovation, undermine democracy, hinder responses to climate change, and contribute to militarization and conflict. Secondly, the book explains how Oil has been essential for the economic rise of the West and how it will feature in its decline. Third, the book identifies the rise and influence of the West's Military-Industrial Complex (MIC) as contributing to the West's economic decline. It is shown that the MIC constitutes an oligarchy and, like all oligarchies, uses lobbying, campaign contributions, and control of the mainstream media to expand and consolidate power. Silicon Valley's integration into the MIC is also examined, driven by the search for new profit opportunities as traditional markets become saturated. This book shows why the Guns–Oil–Oligarchy nexus is a simple explanation for the West's economic decline, and how its understanding offers a simple solution to avert further economic decline: the oligarchs' grip must be broken.

In March 2013, Para Limes organized the conference A Crude look at the Whole. It turned out to be an extraordinary meeting, even more so eleven years later. During the conference the speakers, all giants on their own turf, captured the excitement about what the new field of complexity science could mean for understanding our world and molded it in approaches to extract meaning from these budding insights. Now, eleven years later, the (video's of the) talks create a thrill, that may be similar to what Newton felt when he realized that standing on the shoulders of giants allowed him to see what he saw.In this book we have tried to capture that whole, while at the same time keeping the individual parts in view. We have done so by transcribing and editing the individual presentations, adding a summary to all of them and indicating the relevance of each of the presentations to ongoing and further explorations.

China And Charles Darwin written by James Reeve Pusey and has been published by BRILL this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-03-17 with History categories.
Although Charles Darwin never visited China, his ideas landed there with force. Darwinism was the first great Western theory to make an impact on the Chinese and, from 1895 until at least 1921, when Marxism gained a formal foothold, it was the dominant Western "ism" influencing Chinese politics and thought. The authority of Darwin, sometimes misiniterpreted, influenced reformers and revolutionaries and paved the way for Chinese Marxism and the thought of Mao Tse-tung. This study evaluates Darwin's theory of evolution as a stimulus to Chinese political changes and philosophic challenge to traditional Chinese beliefs. James Pusey bases his analysis on a survey of journals issued from 1896 to 1910 and, after a break for revolutionary action, from 1915 to 1926, with emphasis on the era between the Sino-Japanese War and the Republician Revolution. The story of Darwinism in China involves, among others, the most famous figures of modern Chinese intellectual history.

This book exposes the attempt to teach atheistic evolution to students, often ridiculing their faith in God. The classrooms in our schools have become the battlegrounds for the minds of our children. Since the introduction of evolution by Charles Darwin there has been a growing list of atheist professors who vigorously fight any religion. The classrooms of America should not be the battlegrounds of any religion, but evolution is a religion. It has no place in the classroom since it does not offer any information that improves the teaching of any science class, except evolution itself. There is no proof of evolution, only assertions, innuendos, credulity (belief without proof), and suppositions. Fully one-third of all geology textbooks deal with evolution, which is founded only opinion and undocumented assertions. Therefore, it should be removed from all textbooks. Dr. David Menton, who taught medicine at the Washington School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri, for twenty-five years, stated that he never once needed to reference evolution in any medical class. A coalition of organizations such as the National Academy of Sciences, whose members are 93% atheist or agnostic, and the National Center for Science and Education control most of the government grants intended for schools use, fully support the atheism of evolution, and they attack any criticism of evolution.
