The little-known history of how the Sahara was transformed from a green and fertile land into the largest hot desert in the world The Sahara is the largest hot desert in the world, equal in size to China or the United States. Yet, this arid expanse was once a verdant, pleasant land, fed by rivers and lakes. The Sahara sustained abundant plant and animal life, such as Nile perch, turtles, crocodiles, and hippos, and attracted prehistoric hunters and herders. What transformed this land of lakes into a sea of sands? When the Sahara Was Green describes the remarkable history of Earth’s greatest desert—including why its climate changed, the impact this had on human populations, and how scientists uncovered the evidence for these extraordinary events. From the Sahara’s origins as savanna woodland and grassland to its current arid incarnation, Martin Williams takes us on a vivid journey through time. He describes how the desert’s ancient rocks were first fashioned, how dinosaurs roamed freely across the land, and how it was later covered in tall trees. Along the way, Williams addresses many questions: Why was the Sahara previously much wetter, and will it be so again? Did humans contribute to its desertification? What was the impact of extreme climatic episodes—such as prolonged droughts—upon the Sahara’s geology, ecology, and inhabitants? Williams also shows how plants, animals, and humans have adapted to the Sahara and what lessons we might learn for living in harmony with the harshest, driest conditions in an ever-changing global environment. A valuable look at how an iconic region has changed over millions of years, When the Sahara Was Green reveals the desert’s surprising past to reflect on its present, as well as its possible future.

Do you feel like your life is a barren wilderness at the moment? At times, areas of our lives can become like a wilderness. Grief, bereavement, loss of hope, testing, anger, rejection and pain all play their part. But God loves to come alongside us during such times, to transform our desert experience and renew our joy. This 40-day devotional journeys into the desert areas of our lives and into God's wonderful promises and love. No matter what you are going through, there is hope! God desires to bring renewal into the dry, barren areas of our lives and turn around that which presently seems irresolvable. He is the God of the impossible and is able to turn our wasteland into a fertile pasture, with the foundational truths of His love and the promises of His care and help. Are you thirsty? Thirst is a primal need. We cannot survive physically without water and when we feel thirsty, the relief we experience from drinking is profound. In the same way, God can quench our inner thirst, which goes deeper than our physical need. We thirst for meaning in life - for fulfilment, love, beauty, hope, truth and ultimately God Himself. Only God can truly satisfy our longing. Through this book, learn how to engage more deeply with God, especially during the wilderness times, and understand that He is always with you, longing to bring you relief from suffering and refreshment for your soul. What others are saying... "There is a quiet power to these meditations, like a thunderstorm on mute ... I sense a Voice rumbling through the gentle words. Listen for that Voice ... it offers joy in the midst of life's trials." SHERIDAN VOYSEY "Tracy has one of the most beautiful and intimate relationships with the Lord of anyone I have ever met, so I can highly recommend this devotional. I've watched her survive many desert experiences herself, so she definitely knows what she's talking about!" JENNIFER REES LARCOMBE "Tracy invites us to sit a while and hear the assurances of the God who holds us in our wilderness times as well as in easier times ... the rich words and reflections on Scripture in this devotional will be a blessing to the weak and weary." Have you ever felt as if you were all alone in this world? Nobody understood what was going through your mind or the experiences that you were encountering? It seems that you have entered into a period of God's silence that seems to go on forever. The cry of your heart is "Where are you God?" "Why have you forsaken me?" "How long will you allow this to happen?" What is next after this time of silence? Is it a wilderness that stretches our trust? Is it a punishment or a test? Is it abandonment or a preparation for something wonderful in store for us? Is it God's judgment or His infinite kindness that helps us grow spiritually mature? There are times of difficulty that seem like a "'dark night of the soul." However, this is also when we grow deeper in faith, and we are refined of hindrances, and gain the fragrance of Jesus by the fruit of the Spirit. This time that you go through is a desert experience. Each person encounters his or her own personal struggle. No journey is identical for each person, but each individual desert experience produces the same result in every person. When God deals with us, His purpose is growth, maturity, and preparation. And, it always involves death to self. God will draw us into a desert experience with Him to give us the opportunity to grow (to die to self), to learn to trust Him or to gain more insight into His ways. God has put a blueprint of His divine purpose in each individual. This blueprint was imprinted in your spirit before you were ever born. God never deviates from His plan in order to bring it to complete manifestation. But everyone has to go through these formative years of growing and maturing. This is the "desert experience." This is where your calling is redefined and your character is refined. Are we willing to be changed? Do we want to go further? Perhaps the desert is the place for us. Don't be afraid, it is a road that many have followed in Christ. Just remember that He will never leave you and does not forget his promises. My reason for writing this book is to encourage those of you who are experiencing this dry season in your life. I want you to know that the divine purpose that God has ordered for your life will be completed. God wants you to see and understand that where you are in life and what you are experiencing in your life is not going to destroy you. You will exit from your desert with a redefined call and a refined character. You are not alone, but God your Father is right there with you. He has promised that He will never leave us nor forsake us, but will always be present with us. In the spiritual life, the desert experience is a time of preparation and deepening of our life with the Lord.

Riyadh written by Yasser Elsheshtawy and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-09-27 with Architecture categories.

Riyadh has set its sights on becoming a world city befitting the twenty-first century. To that end it has embarked on a massive construction drive evidenced in the proliferation of proposals for high-end districts, giga-developments and elaborate infrastructures. An urban vision seemingly dedicated to attracting global capital. Yet such a narrative can be misleading. A ‘humanization programme’, initiated during the tenure of its former mayor Abdulaziz bin Ayyaf, has complemented the city’s rapid rise by providing spaces catering for the everyday needs of its inhabitants. Yasser Elsheshtawy, in this richly illustrated book, targets these people-centred settings. It is a compelling counter-narrative interweaving critical theoretical insights, personal observations, and serendipitous encounters. He deftly demonstrates how Riyadh thrives through the actions of its people. As the world moves towards an urban model that is resilient and humane, the humanizing efforts of an Arab city are worthy of our attention. Riyadh’s premise is perhaps best captured in the cover image depicting the desert riverbed of Wadi Sulai, filled with rainwater, making its way towards the Saudi capital. Along its banks there will be dedicated public pathways and urban parks. It is a vision of an urbanity where both the spectacular and the everyday coexist. A city that is not just dedicated to the few, but one that serves the many.

Are Arab Gulf cities, the likes of Dubai, Abu Dhabi or Doha, on their way to extinction? Is their fate obsolescence? Or, are they the model for our urban future? Can a city whose very existence is predicated on an imported labour force who build and operate these gleaming urban centres remain a viable urban entity? Could the transient nature of this urban model, its temporariness and precariousness, also be its doom? In this wide-ranging book Yasser Elsheshtawy takes on these tough, but necessary, questions aiming to examine the very nature of the Arab Gulf city and whether it can sustain its existence throughout the twenty-first century. Having lived in the region for more than two decades he researched its marginalized and forgotten urban settings, trying to understand how a temporary people can live in a place that inherently refuses to give them the possibility of becoming citizens. By being embedded in these spaces and reconciling their presence with his own personal encounters with transience, he discovered a resilience and defiance against the forces of the hegemonic city. Using subtle acts of resistance, these temporary inhabitants have found a way to sustain and create a home, to set down roots in the midst of a fast changing and transient urbanity. Their stories, recounted in this book through case studies and in-depth analysis, give hope to cities everywhere. Transience is not a fait accompli: rather the actions of citizens, residents and migrants – even in the highly restrictive spaces of the Gulf – show us that the future metropolis may very well not turn out to be a ‘utopia of the few and a dystopia of the many’. This could be an illusion, but it is a necessary illusion because the alternative is irrelevance.

We are all influenced by our environment and by everything in it. It is easy for some plants to prosper and bear much fruit under certain environmental conditions, but other plants need different climatic conditions. This truth is also valid in relation to human beings. The environment you live in has a bearing on your altitude and your performance. Achievement or success in any area is a function of many factors, including your environment and prevailing circumstances. Therefore, prevailing conditions can either inhibit or enhance your performance and, subsequently, your success. However, factors such as knowledge, wisdom, skill, and attitude can override the outcome of a negative environment or circumstances. For example, gravity is a fact of life, but birds overcome gravity all the time by flapping their wings. Therefore they are able to fly for sustained periods without falling to the ground. In the same way, the application of the right combination of knowledge, skill, and determination can transform any circumstance. This book deals with six timeless mathematical principles, with strong biblical foundations to help anyone or any group transform its present state into a more desirable one.
