Language "Appealing As Sunlight After a Storm." A sentence should read as if its author, had he held a plough instead of a pen, could have drawn a furrow deep and straight to the end. —Henry David Thoreau Prose consists of ... phrases tacked together like the sections of a prefabricated hen-house. —George Orwell Whether it invokes hard work or merely a hen-house, a good simile is like a good picture—it's worth a thousand words. Similes Puns And Counterfactuals In Literary Narrative written by Jennifer Riddle Harding and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-04-21 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.
In this study, Jennifer Riddle Harding presents a cognitive analysis of three figures of speech that have readily identifiable forms: similes, puns, and counterfactuals. Harding argues that when deployed in literary narrative, these forms have narrative functions—such as the depiction of conscious experiences, allegorical meanings, and alternative plots—uniquely developed by these more visible figures of speech. Metaphors, by contrast, are often "invisible" in the formal structure of a text. With a solid cognitive grounding, Harding’s approach emphasizes the relationship between figurative forms and narrative effects. Harding demonstrates the literary functions of previously neglected figures of speech, and the potential for a unified approach to a topic that crosses cognitive disciplines. Her work has implications for the rhetorical approach to figures of speech, for cognitive disciplines, and for the studies of literature, rhetoric, and narrative.

In "Cargoes for Crusoes," Grant M. Overton presents a thought-provoking exploration of the themes of survival and human ingenuity through the lens of travel and adventure literature. Set against the backdrop of the early 20th century, Overton's prose is characterized by rich, descriptive passages that evoke the fantastical and often perilous journeys undertaken by seafarers and explorers. The book engages with the romantic notions of adventure, capturing the essence of longing and the spirit of discovery prevalent in the literature of his time, all while delivering a nuanced critique of colonialism's impact on both the native people and the environment. Grant M. Overton, an accomplished author and scholar in his own right, was deeply influenced by his personal experiences and the burgeoning interest in exploration during his era. His background in literature and fascination with the cultural exchanges that accompany travel shaped his narrative style and thematic focus in "Cargoes for Crusoes." Overton'Äôs ability to weave personal insight with historical context offers readers a compelling lens through which to understand the complexities of adventure literature. This book is highly recommended for those interested in the intersections of travel, culture, and literature. Overton's unique perspective provides a critical yet accessible entry point into the world of exploration narratives, making it a valuable addition to the collections of both casual readers and scholarly enthusiasts alike.
