In this book, a programming model is developed that addresses the fundamental issues of "large-scale programming," unifying several concepts from database theory, object-oriented programming and designs of reactive systems. The model and the associated theory have been christened "Seuss." The major goal of Seuss is to simplify multiprogramming. To this end, we separate the concern of concurrent implementation from the core program design problem. A program execution is understood as a single thread of control - sequential executions of actions that are chosen according to some scheduling policy - yet program implementation permits concurrent executions of multiple threads. As a consequence, it is possible to reason about the properties of a program from its single execution thread, whereas an implementation may exploit the inherent concurrency for efficient execution.

Among all the interests in parallelism, there is an essential and fundamental one that has remained largely unexplored, namely the question of how to design parallel programs from their specification. And that is what this book is about. It proposes a method for the formal development of parallel programs - multiprograms as we have preferred to call them -, and it does so with a minimum of formal gear, viz. with the predicate calculus and with the meanwhile well-established theory of Owicki and Gries. The fact that one can get away with just this theory will probably not convey anything to the uninitiated, but it may all the more come as a surprise to those who were exposed earlier to correctness of multiprograms. Contrary to common belief, the Owicki/Gries theory can indeed be effectively put to work for the formal development of multiprograms, regardless of whether these algorithms are distributed or not. That is what we intend to exemplify with this book.

The second half of the twentieth century saw an astonishing increase in computing power; today computers are unbelievably faster than they used to be, they have more memory, they can communicate routinely with remote machines all over the world - and they can fit on a desktop. But, despite this remarkable progress, the voracity of modem applications and user expectations still pushes technology right to the limit. As hardware engineers build ever-more-powerful machines, so too must software become more sophisticated to keep up. Medium- to large-scale programming projects need teams of people to pull everything together in an acceptable timescale. The question of how pro gram mers understand their own tasks, and how they fit together with those of their colleagues to achieve the overall goal, is a major concern. Without that under standing it would be practically impossible to realise the commercial potential of our present-day computing hardware. That programming has been able to keep pace with the formidable advances in hardware is due to the similarly formidable advances in the principles for design, construction and organisation of programs. The efficacy of these methods and principles speaks for itself - computer technology is all-pervasive - but even more telling is that they are beginning to feed back and inftuence hardware design as weIl. The study of such methods is called programming methodology, whose topics range over system-and domain-modelling, concurrency, object orientation, program specification and validation. That is the theme of this collection.

The 19th Annual Meeting of the European Conference on Object-Oriented Programming—ECOOP 2005—took place during the last week of July in Glasgow, Scotland, UK. Although such self-evaluations should always be taken with a large grain of salt, ECOOP is undisputedly the pre- inent conference on object-orientation outside of the United States. This volume contains the proceedings of the Eighth International Workshop on Rewriting Logic and its Applications (WRLA 2010) that was held in Paphos, Cyprus, March 20–21, 2010, as a satellite workshop of the European Joint C- ferences on Theory and Practice of Software (ETAPS 2010). Rewriting logic is a natural semantic framework for representing conc- rency,parallelism,communicationandinteraction,aswellasbeing anexpressive (meta)logical framework for representing logics. It can then be used for spe- fying a wide range of systems and programming languages in various appli- tion ?elds. In recent years, several executable speci?cation languages based on rewriting logic (ASF+SDF, CafeOBJ, ELAN, Maude) have been designed and implemented. The aim of the WRLA workshop series is to bring together - searchers with a common interest in rewriting logic and its applications, and to give them the opportunity to present their recent works, discuss future research directions, and exchange ideas. Previous WRLA workshops were held in Asilomar (1996), Pont-a-Mousson ` (1998), Kanazawa (2000), Pisa (2002), Barcelona (2004), Vienna (2006), and Budapest (2008), and their proceedings have been published inElectronic Notes in Theoretical Computer Science. The possibility of using queueing networks to study the performance of multiprogrammed computer systems that use memory hierarchies was investigated. It was found that these kinds of models are adequate provided the success function of the memory hierarchy is known. A stochastic algorithm to obtain the success function of the hierarchy was developed. The results obtained, whenever this model is used in conjunction with the queueing network, were extensively compared with conventional simulation techniques, and the accuracy found to be within five percent. The problem of scheduling the Central Processor was considered, and empirical algorithms to determine policies that set upper and lower bounds on the success function of the hierarchy were proposed. Mathematical methods were employed to analyze various system configurations, that include several input-output channels and processors. (Author).
