About A Dish of Orts Read the thoughts of the man who influenced three generations of philosophers and writers. Lovers of fantasy, literary apologetics, and Christian thought will appreciate A Dish of Orts, MacDonald’s work on using the imagination to lift and enliven the mind. George MacDonald, considered the pioneer of the fantasy genre, had an impact on the mind and imaginations of some of the most influential Christian writers of the 20th century. C.S. Lewis, G.K. Chesterton, and J.R.R. Tolkien all were greatly impacted by both MacDonald’s imaginative fiction as well as his sermons and social commentary. At the hub of the English Victorian literary circles, MacDonald was friends with many of the literary luminaries of his day such as Poet Laureate Alfred Tennyson, William Thackeray, John Ruskin, as well as many others.. Lovers of Alice in Wonderland have George MacDonald to thank for its publication after Lewis Carroll (the pen name for C.L. Dodgson) was encouraged to publish the story after its enthusiastic reception by MacDonald's children. MacDonald was so widely regarded, that upon his passing, G.K. Chesteron said of him, "George MacDonald was one of the three or four greatest men of the nineteenth century." This great man is gone, but his works remain. A Dish of Orts is a collection of essays by George MacDonald on topics ranging from imagination to Shakespeare, from poetry to living the true Christian life. This new annotated edition bridges the gap for 21st century readers to MacDonald’s 19th century world.

Book Excerpt: ...n of what is far better said in the preceding extract from Carlyle, but it was written before we had read (if reviewers may be allowed to confess such ignorance) the book from which that extract is taken.]But while the imagination of man has thus the divine function of putting thought into form, it has a duty altogether human, which is paramount to that function--the duty, namely, which springs from his immediate relation to the Father, that of following and finding out the divine imagination in whose image it was made. To do this, the man must watch its signs, its manifestations. He must contemplate what the Hebrew poets call the works of His hands."But to follow those is the province of the intellect, not of the imagination."--We will leave out of the question at present that poetic interpretation of the works of Nature with which the intellect has almost nothing, and the imagination almost everything, to do. It is unnecessary to insist that the higher being of a flower even is dependent for its rec...

Since printing throughout the title Orts, a doubt has arisen in my mind as to its fitting the nature of the volume. It could hardly, however, be imagined that I associate the idea of worthlessness with the work contained in it. No one would insult his readers by offering them what he counted valueless scraps, and telling them they were such. These papers, those two even which were caught in the net of the ready-writer from extempore utterance, whatever their merits in themselves; are the results of by no means trifling labour. So much a man ought to be able to say for his work. And hence I might defend, if not quite justify my title-for they are but fragmentary presentments of larger meditation. My friends at least will accept them as such, whether they like their collective title or not. The title of the last is not quite suitable. It is that of the religious newspaper which reported the sermon. I noted the fact too late for correction. It ought to be True Greatness.

This bibliography and resource consists of a chronological introduction to the development of Lewis's works, a copious bibliography and a guide to the study of Lewis, an introductory essay on Christology in Lewis, and a glossary for those unfamiliar with some of the background and terms to Lewis's understanding of revelation and the Christ. It will be an invaluable resource for all scholars of C. S. Lewis. The bibliography stands alone but it also serves to complement the three volumes of the series C. S. Lewis, Revelation, and the Christ.

There are in whose notion education would seem to consist in the production of a certain repose through the development of this and that faculty, and the depression, if not eradication, of this and that other faculty. But if mere repose were the end in view, an unsparing depression of all the faculties would be the surest means of approaching it, provided always the animal instincts could be depressed likewise, or, better still, kept in a state of constant repletion. Happily, however, for the human race, it possesses in the passion of hunger even, a more immediate saviour than in the wisest selection and treatment of its faculties. For repose is not the end of education; its end is a noble unrest, an ever renewed awaking from the dead, a ceaseless questioning of the past for the interpretation of the future, an urging on of the motions of life, which had better far be accelerated into fever, than retarded into lethargy.

Biblical Wisdom And The Victorian Literary Imagination written by Denae Dyck and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-02-08 with Literary Criticism categories.

Examining the creative thought that arose in response to 19th-century religious controversies, this book demonstrates that the pressures exerted by historical methods of biblical scholarship prompted an imaginative recovery of wisdom literature. During the Victorian period, new approaches to the interpretation of sacred texts called into question traditional ideas about biblical inspiration, motivating literary transformations of inherited symbols, metaphors, and forms. Drawing on the theoretical work of Paul Ricoeur, Denae Dyck considers how Victorian writers from a variety of belief positions used wisdom literature to reframe their experiences of questioning, doubt, and uncertainty: Elizabeth Barrett Browning, George MacDonald, George Eliot, John Ruskin, and Olive Schreiner. This study contributes to the reassessment of historical and contemporary narratives of secularization by calling attention to wisdom literature as a vital, distinctive genre that animated the search for meaning within an increasingly ideologically diverse world.
