A Distant Drummer attends more to F. Scott Fitzgerald's aesthetic merits, ideas, style, techniques, context of his works and less to biographical details which, critics believe, are intricately interwoven within his works. In striving to respond to Fitzgerald's artistry away from the impulse of the author's personal experience, it is - in a very strange paradox - more attuned and, in consequence, closer to Fitzgerald, who wanted his fiction to be objectively judged and free of the stigma which besmirches his reputation.

Kenneth MacMillan's ballets are in constant demand by world-famous companies, particularly Romeo and Juliet, Manon and Mayerling. However, MacMillan was tormented by an acute sense of being an outsider, and often at odds with the institutions in which he worked. A real-life Billy Elliot from a Scottish working class family, MacMillan demonstrated a prodigious talent for dancing from an early age. Following the premature death of his mother, the young MacMillan sought an escape, and despite his father's disapproval, secured a place at Sadler's Wells. Paradoxically he found himself crippled by stage-fright during the height of his professional career, leaving him with only one option - choreography. He went on to produce ballets which defied convention and became renowned for challenging audiences. Despite criticism, MacMillan achieved international acclaim, becoming artistic director of both the Berlin Ballet and the Royal Ballet. On a personal level he found unexpected happiness with his wife and daughter in the later stages of his life, making it all the more tragic when he died suddenly at the age of 62. This stunning biography reveals a complex artist who fiercely guarded his own privacy, whilst his ballets communicated his darkest and most intimate thoughts.

The themes of culture and identity will forever bear relevance in a Caribbean context. P. Antonio 'Boo' Rudder approaches these themes from the very intimate knowledge which he has acquired from being both an artist and an administrator, a CEO and a cultural warrior; one who has worn and continues to wear several of these caps. He has taken up the challenge to address them honestly and forthrightly in the context of a Barbadian perspective. This work traces developments in the creative and artistic landscape of Barbados over the past three decades, describing policies, initiatives and personalities that have significantly impacted these developments. In doing so it exposes the milestone achievements, outstanding contributions, opportunities, benchmarks, stumbling blocks, errors, foibles, and conundrums emerging from such developments. It is a case study which can inform researchers, developers of cultural policies and programmes, and cultural practitioners across the Caribbean. After reading Marching to a Different Drummer, it will be difficult to plead innocence when questioned about the state of culture and our cultural perceptions in Barbados.

'More than lives up to the hype' Observer 'Set to become a publishing sensation' Kirsty Lang, BBC Front Row 'An astounding achievement' Sunday Times 'The lost giant of American literature' New Yorker June, 1957. One afternoon, in the backwater town of Sutton, a young black farmer by the name of Tucker Caliban matter-of-factly throws salt on his field, shoots his horse and livestock, sets fire to his house and departs the southern state. And thereafter, the entire African-American population leave with him. The reaction that follows is told across a dozen chapters, each from the perspective of a different white townsperson. These are boys, girls, men and women; either liberal or conservative, bigoted or sympathetic - yet all of whom are grappling with this spontaneous, collective rejection of subordination. In 1962, aged just 24, William Melvin Kelley's debut novel A Different Drummer earned him critical comparisons to James Baldwin and William Faulkner. Fifty-five years later, author and journalist Kathryn Schulz happened upon the novel serendipitously and was inspired to write the New Yorker article 'The Lost Giant of American Literature', included as a foreword to this edition.
