Doctors are commonly seen characters on the stage in the sixteenth and seventeenth century. In Shakespeare’s plays there are nine medical practitioners, among which six of them are professional physicians. This thesis is to explore how Shakespeare deploys the conventional traits and dramatic functions of stage doctors in his own doctor characters to serve different dramaturgical themes. Physicians in the sixteenth and seventeenth century occupied the top of the hierarchy of medical practitioners. They strove to maintain their social and intellectual superiority, and were often perceived as profit-oriented and avaricious. Stage doctors share certain traits, such as deferent, conservative and greedy. Doctors usually play minor parts in plays and some of them are assigned the tasks of poisoning by court members. The stereotyped correlation between a doctor and treason involving poisoning helps to shape a doctor character of this kind. The outcome of a crime, whether a doctor kills or not, serves as genre markers of the plays: when a doctor kills it turns to be a tragedy, when he does not it tends to be a comedy or tragicomedy. Shakespeare uses doctors’ conventional traits and their social and intellectual authority to assist the flow of the plot. In “The Merry Wives in Windsor”, Dr. Caius’ pompousness and arrogance, as well as his social and intellectual authority being ridiculed, contribute to the comedy of the play. The nameless doctor in “The Two Noble Kinsmen” successfully cures the Jailer’s Daughter and reinserts her into her expected social position. His authority is normalized and endorsed, indicating the consolidation of a society. In “Macbeth”, which is full of medical images and metaphors, a doctor appears near the end of the play as a concrete manifestation of the decline of the political body of Scotland. Key Words: physicians, stage doctors, genre marker, body politics, disease.

Physicians, readers and scholars have long been fascinated by Shakespeare's medical language and the presence of healers, wise women and surgeons in his work. This dictionary includes entries about ailments, medical concepts, cures and, taking into account recent critical work on the early modern body, bodily functions, parts, and pathologies in Shakespeare. Shakespeare's Medical Language will provide a comprehensive guide for those needing to understand specific references in the plays, in particular, archaic diagnoses or therapies ('choleric', 'tub-fast') and words that have changed their meanings ('phlegmatic', 'urinal'); those who want to learn more about early modern medical concepts ('elements', 'humors'); and those who might have questions about the embodied experience of living in Shakespeare's England. Entries reveal what terms and concepts might mean in the context of Shakespeare's plays, and the significance that a particular disease, body part or function has in individual plays and the Shakespearean corpus at large.

Unlike enthusiastic treatments by doctors of Shakespeare's knowledge of medicine, it is the work of a scholar specializing in Elizabethan drama who, guided by medical historians, has ventured into an interdisciplinary field. Several chapters describe the background of various theoretical and practical aspects of medicine with which Shakespeare's educated contemporaries were familiar. How did they think about the body with its physiological processes and their relation to mind and soul? How were health and various diseases understood? How were the sick treated, where, and by what kinds of people? What were the chief methods of treatment and what was the rationale for them? What kinds of literature provided ordinary literate Elizabethan men and women with useful medical information? How much controversy was there in medical thought and practice? Yet the book's central focus remains on Shakespeare.

Through an examination of the myriad doctor-characters and pseudo doctor-characters in Hamlet, All's Well That Ends Well, Macbeth, The Merry Wives of Windsor, Cymbeline, and Pericles it becomes clear that Shakespeare's frustrated respect for doctors aims to create a model for what a good doctor should be---a model that is still applicable today.

This compilation of 740 quotations of medical interest grew out of a thorough reading and re-reading of William Shakespeare’s 38 plays, 154 sonnets, and the several long poems. The emotional and physical problems of his characters are frequently mentioned in the plays, and disease and remedy are often used as metaphor to clarify non-medical situations. Although the science of Medicine has changed enormously in recent times, the humanistic aspects have not. Shakespeare’s comments on illness and its effects are still quite pertinent. His unique insight, archaic style, and creative language bring a certain freshness and charm to our continuing contemplation of the art of Medicine. Dr. Foster’s limited interspersed comments are meant to provide a background picture of Elizabethan times and Medicine and, where needed, to remind the reader of the setting of the quotation in the plays and poems.
