Excerpt from A Field Book for Civil Engineers Chapter VI. treats of construction, consequently here, among other things, are introduced methods of setting out the work and computing quantities. The difficulties which the young engineer experiences in setting slope stakes, were kept vividly in mind when writing this chapter. It is believed that the subject is presented in such a simple manner, and so fully illustrated, that he can easily comprehend it, and make ready use of the methods explained. Chapter VII., on Frogs and Switches, is from the pen of my esteemed friend and former student, Lewis C. Weldin, C. E., Assistant Engineer Pennsylvania Railroad. Mr. Weldin's twenty years' experience in the engineering department of this famous highway, qualifies him to present, with the authority of an expert, this subject in a most practical manner. By adopting a notation slightly different from that of other writers under this head, he has, in many cases, obtained results much simpler than any hitherto published, and he has increased the value of his work by the introduction of numerous formulas and examples, selected from his extensive practice. I therefore desire to express here my acknowledgments to Mr. Weldin for this valuable chapter. The book contains all the necessary tables for field use. Among them are included tables of natural trigonometric functions, sines, cosines, secants, cosecants, tangents, cotangents, versed sines, and exsecants, as well as tables of radii, long chords, squares, cubes, functions of a one-degree curve, and numerous others. Excerpt from Standard Forms of Field Notes for Civil Engineers The object of this book is to present forms for notetaking, and such necessary instructions in the use of them, that an engineer can take a complete set of notes and record the results of a survey in neat and workman-like manner. In all the books dealing with Surveying.and Railroad Location very little space has been given to the art of recording notes. An engineer who has worked long in the field will gradually develop a system of note-keeping which he will follow in a general way time after time; yet he will sometimes vary from his form in a few minor instances just enough to confuse a draftsman. As for the younger members of the profession, it is often hard for them to record the results of their surveys in such a manner that they can translate the notes themselves, unless they are plotted while the survey is still fresh in their minds. It is a very common thing to see an engineer called into the office to explain his notes to the draftsman; or a party returned to the field to get information which should have been taken in the original survey. An engineering party can be placed in the field and maintained only at a very large expense; and speed and accuracy is demanded by every employer. Excerpt from Reminiscences of an Old English Civil Engineer, 1858-1908 Half a century of active and continuous employment in the various fields of civil engineering in parts of the world-wide British Empire and in the United States of North America may contain matters of interest to my old and young friends wheresoever they be. The twentieth and thirty-first of January, 1908, were two fiftieth anniversaries in my professional career. The latter date recalled the launching of the Great Eastern steamship at Mill Wall, on the Thames. I believe I am the only living engineer who had been employed by Mr. I. K. Brunel, her designer and builder, in his oflice, and witnessed her construction during 1854-5. I was not a witness of the launching ceremony in 1858, as I was then in India, engaged in the survey and staking out of the Great Indian Peninsula Railway, which was to connect Bombay with Calcutta and Madras. C'yrus Field told me in 1871, in New York, that if he had not had the fortunate opportunity to charter this gigantic vessel for the laying of his perfected cable on the bed of the Atlantic Ocean in 1865-6, he could not have made such a success of it. We should realize that the laying of this cable was the most important international link and economic event between England and North America since the first discovery of America by John and Sebastian Cabot in 1497-8. England on this fiftieth anniversary had the opportunity of recalling to mind the great name and master - genius of one of her most famous civil engineers, who had during the first half of the last century designed and built the largest steam vessels - the Great Britain and the Great Western - for international commerce across the Atlantic Ocean. He, too, had had the foresight to realize the fact that growing population and increase of commerce in the future would require a broader width of gauge for railways than the ordi nary old wagon gauge of England.
