Excerpt from The Boer Fight for Freedom After resigning membership of the British House of Commons in October, 1899, as a personal and political protest against a war which I believed to be the greatest infamy of the nineteenth century, I proceeded, a short time afterwards, to the Transvaal to see and learn more about the little nation against whose liberty and land this crime had been planned and executed. This book embodies the facts and information which I obtained in my intercourse with the leaders and people of both Republics. It also contains the impressions which followed from a few months' close contact with them during their unparalleled struggle to retain their independence. I owe the expression of grateful acknowledgments for the facilities given and the assistance willingly tendered to me by members of both governments during my stay in the Transvaal and Orange Free State, and to numerous officers and officials who supplied me with authentic details of the earlier battles of the campaign in Natal and on the western borderland. My thanks are specially due to Dr. Reitz, State Secretary of the S. A. R.; Attorney-General (now Commandant) Smuts; and to Mr. Piet Grobler, also of the Administration. To Commandant-General Louis Botha, his military secretary Adjutant Sandberg, Adjutant Robert Emmet, Field Cornet Cherrie Emmet, General De la Rey, General Tobias Smuts, Colonel Trichardt (head of the Transvaal artillery), Colonel Blake, the Hollander officers in charge of the English prisoners at Pretoria, the Landrosts of Pretoria and Johannesburg, and to the editors and proprietors of the "Volksstem" and of the "Standard and Diggers' News." Excerpt from Korea's Fight for Freedom It seems evident that either the world made a mistake in its first estimate of Korean character, or these people have experienced a new birth. Which is the right explanation? Maybe both. To understand what has happened, and what, as I write, is still happening, one has to go back for a few years. When Japan, in face of her repeated pledges, annexed Korea, her statesmen adopted an avowed policy of assimilation. They attempted to turn the people of Korea into Japanese - an inferior brand of Japanese, a serf race, speaking the lan guage and following the customs of their overlords, and serving them. Excerpt from The Irish Orators: A History of Ireland's Fight for Freedom It would have been unfortunate if the author of this volume had not placed it in the hands of the public. His demand and success 0.3 a public speaker upon Irish topics led him to a deep study of the history of that glorious nation, and the deeper he studied the more fascinated ho became. His work is imbued with the spirit of his own researches and in turn fascinates the reader. Among the great men who pass in review, Daniel O'Connell is given high place and justly so, for he was a most worthy leader of the people for over a generation. His preeminence recalls the estimation of him held by the Count de Montalembert who said that O'Connell was the finest orator whom he had listened to, or whose works he had read. The reader will find this valuable contribution to the story of Ireland's greatness impartial, instructive and interesting and of such appeal that he will not be satisfied until he reads to the end. Excerpt from The Fight for Freedom: A Play in Four Acts When the International People's Theatre is founded, one of the first plays it ought to put on, if it means to do educational as well as artistic work, is Douglas Goldring's beautiful drama, "The Fight for Freedom." Not that this drama is a panegyric of Socialism. On the contrary, it might almost be said to be a criticism of the Socialist party. Its merit, its strength, resides in its bringing out the pathetic tragedy of the harsh truth underlying the obscure drama that divides humanity in two. "The Fight for Freedom" puts before us the idea that at the present time dominates and influences all other ideas - the idea of revolution. It is set in its proper place here, taken at its source, at the very heart of man. Thence it tumbles like an impetuous torrent and dashes into a river. For it is not enough, no, it is not enough to aspire towards the happiness of the people, towards the deep, radical transformation of the old regime which oppresses them.
