É autor de cerca de setenta obras – muitas delas escritas em colaboração com a sua mulher, Franca Rame (atriz descendente de uma longa linhagem de atores) –, ácidas sátiras em que arremete sem piedade contra o poder político, o capitalismo, a máfia e o Vaticano, e que o converteram num dos homens de teatro com mais prestígio internacional.
