The modeling and simulation of fluids, solids and other materials with significant coupling and thermal effects is becoming an increasingly important area of study in applied mathematics and engineering. Necessary for such studies is a fundamental understanding of the basic principles of continuum mechanics and thermodynamics. This book is a clear introduction to these principles. It is designed for a one- or two-quarter course for advanced undergraduate and beginning graduate students in the mathematical and engineering sciences, and is based on over nine years of teaching experience. It is also sufficiently self-contained for use outside a classroom environment. Prerequisites include a basic knowledge of linear algebra, multivariable calculus, differential equations and physics. The authors begin by explaining tensor algebra and calculus in three-dimensional Euclidean space. Using both index and coordinate-free notation, they introduce the basic axioms of continuum mechanics pertaining to mass, force, motion, temperature, energy and entropy, and the concepts of frame-indifference and material constraints. They devote four chapters to different theories of fluids and solids, and, unusually at this level, they consider both isothermal and thermal theories in detail. The book contains a wealth of exercises that support the theory and illustrate various applications. Full solutions to odd-numbered exercises are given at the end of each chapter and a complete solutions manual for all exercises is available to instructors upon request. Each chapter also contains a bibliography with references covering different presentations, further applications and numerical aspects of the theory. Book jacket.

Introductory Fluid Mechanics written by Joseph Katz and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-08-31 with Technology & Engineering categories.

The objective of this introductory text is to familiarise students with the basic elements of fluid mechanics so that they will be familiar with the jargon of the discipline and the expected results. At the same time, this book serves as a long-term reference text, contrary to the oversimplified approach occasionally used for such introductory courses. The second objective is to provide a comprehensive foundation for more advanced courses in fluid mechanics (within disciplines such as mechanical or aerospace engineering). In order to avoid confusing the students, the governing equations are introduced early, and the assumptions leading to the various models are clearly presented. This provides a logical hierarchy and explains the interconnectivity between the various models. Supporting examples demonstrate the principles and provide engineering analysis tools for many engineering calculations.

An ideal textbook for civil and environmental, mechanical, and chemical engineers taking the required Introduction to Fluid Mechanics course, Fluid Mechanics for Civil and Environmental Engineers offers clear guidance and builds a firm real-world foundation using practical examples and problem sets. Each chapter begins with a statement of objectives, and includes practical examples to relate the theory to real-world engineering design challenges. The author places special emphasis on topics that are included in the Fundamentals of Engineering exam, and make the book more accessible by highlighting keywords and important concepts, including Mathcad algorithms, and providing chapter summaries of important concepts and equations.

This is a modern and elegant introduction to engineering fluid mechanics enriched with numerous examples, exercises and applications. A swollen creek tumbles over rocks and through crevasses, swirling and foaming. Taffy can be stretched, reshaped and twisted in various ways. Both the water and the taffy are fluids and their motions are governed by the laws of nature. The aim of this textbook is to introduce the reader to the analysis of flows using the laws of physics and the language of mathematics. The book delves deeply into the mathematical analysis of flows; knowledge of the patterns fluids form and why they are formed, and also the stresses fluids generate and why they are generated, is essential to designing and optimising modern systems and devices. Inventions such as helicopters and lab-on-a-chip reactors would never have been designed without the insight provided by mathematical models.
