If ever there were an expert in the history, beauty, and overall best places to visit in Hawaii, Craig E. Burgess would be that person. His first visit to the islands was in 1974, the first of forty-one in total! Providing a glimpse of Hawaiian culture, history, music, art, and daily lifestyles to the reader, A Fleeting Glimpse of Paradise was inspired by Craig's time spent with special residents of Hawaii who shared a special "Spirit of Aloha" during his forty-one visits to the islands. His hope is that during your visit, you spend time with local residents of the islands and "talk story" with them, rather than simply going there for an "Aloha" shirt, flower lei, or some other souvenir. This beautiful collection of anecdotes, inspired poems, and special stories you can't get from travel books encourages readers to find ways to conserve the natural beauty of the islands-and to make the very best of their experience in this magical utopia.

About the Author Craig E. Burgess graduated from Audubon High School in Audubon, New Jersey, as the valedictorian of the class of 1963. He entered Rutgers University as a pre-med student, then changed his major after his sophomore year, graduating with a double major in languages: Spanish and German. He received a teaching fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania and, in 1968, was hired as a Spanish instructor for the new Cherry Hill High School East, located only six miles from his home in Audubon. Craig completed his master's degree at Penn-in education-in 1971 and spent his entire twenty-six-year teaching career at CHHSE, taking early retirement in 1994. While at East, he served as Language Department Chairperson for six years and as faculty advisor to the Spanish Honor Society, the school's Adopt-A-Grandparent program, and the International Literary Club-a group of students who received national recognition for its language magazine, Passport. Craig's writing "career" began in 1987-at the age of forty-two-after receiving national recognition for a poem he had composed on one of his forty-one visits to the Hawaiian Islands: a poem entitled "A Fleeting Glimpse of Paradise," the title selected for this collection of photographs and poems, a collection published after more than thirty years of experiences in the islands.

The Count of Monte Cristo meets… her wife? Lucia is a succubus, a demon with the power to shape the emotions and passions of mortals. Summoned often into the world of Melodia, she takes pride in upholding her demonic contracts to the best of her abilities. She likes to think she does her job well… though a string of recent failures say otherwise. Talia, the recently elevated Duke of Fallmire, summons Lucia for a simple reason: to pose as her wife and fulfill marital obligations to the satisfaction of Parliament. All to say, just a few weeks of walking around the estate and playing nice with the neighbors before a conveniently tragic death. Quick and easy. But immediately, Lucia smells blood in the water. Behind closed doors, the Duke plots vengeance upon those who killed her father—and the demon wants in. Revenge, after all, is much more fun… and more lucrative, to boot. But can Lucia predict how hard she’d fall for the Duke? (Not a chance). And can the Duke find it in her vengeful heart to love? Spice Level lightly described nudity, fade-to-black sex. 64,000 words

Alone on a midsummer night, Cat wakes to find a stranger dressed in yellow ‘rat-a-tap, tapping’ his feet. Captivated by the music of Kutze’s steps, Cat resolves to travel abroad and tread wheat alongside this stranger when he becomes an adult. But first, Cat must grow up in the small port town where he lives with his timpanist grandfather and a father obsessed with an unsolved mathematical proof, and which, as part of the series of increasingly surreal events that characterize his life, Cat rescues from a plague of rats by his curious ability to imitate cats’ yowls. The ‘rat-a-tap, tap’ of Kutze’s step echoes through Cat’s life as he matures, moves away from the town to become a musician in the big city and, eventually, journeys further afield, across the sea.

This book examines the collection of prayers known as the Qumran Hodayot (= Thanksgiving Hymns) in light of ancient visionary traditions, new developments in neuropsychology, and post-structuralist understandings of the embodied subject. The thesis of this book is that the ritualized reading of reports describing visionary experiences written in the first person "I" had the potential to create within the ancient reader the subjectivity of a visionary which can then predispose him to have a religious experience. This study examines how references to the body and the strategic arousal of emotions could have functioned within a practice of performative reading to engender a religious experience of ascent. In so doing, this book offers new interdisciplinary insights into meditative ritual reading as a religious practice for transformation in antiquity.

'If I had to pick a single general martial arts history book in English, I would recommend A Brief History of the Martial Arts by Dr Jonathan Clements' RICHARD BEITLICH, Martial History Team blog From Shaolin warrior monks to the movies of Bruce Lee, a new history of the evolution of East Asian styles of unarmed combat, from Kung Fu to Ninjutsu Folk tales of the Shaolin Temple depict warrior monks with superhuman abilities. Today, dozens of East Asian fighting styles trace their roots back to the Buddhist brawlers of Shaolin, although any quest for the true story soon wanders into a labyrinth of forgeries, secret texts and modern retellings. This new study approaches the martial arts from their origins in military exercises and callisthenics. It examines a rich folklore from old wuxia tales of crime-fighting heroes to modern kung fu movies. Centre stage is given to the stories that martial artists tell themselves about themselves, with accounts (both factual and fictional) of famous practitioners including China's Yim Wing-chun, Wong Fei-hong, and Ip Man, as well as Japanese counterparts such as Kano Jigoro, Itosu Anko and So Doshin. The history of martial arts encompasses secret societies and religious rebels, with intimate glimpses of the histories of China, Korea and Japan, their conflicts and transformations. The book also charts the migration of martial arts to the United States and beyond. Special attention is paid to the turmoil of the twentieth century, the cross-cultural influence of Japanese colonies in Asia, and the post-war rise of martial arts in sport and entertainment - including the legacy of Bruce Lee, the dilemma of the ninja and the global audience for martial arts in fiction.
