This is a story written by a pilot who followed his father into commercial aviation. It is, on one hand, the biography of a professional pilot and, on other levels, provides us with insight into the mental disciplines necessary to follow such a career path. The story begins with a description of his life as a kid in rural New Jersey and follows him from his first flight to his last, some fifty years latter. As each passage of life ends, a new begins. The author provides us with an understanding of what it means to be a professional aviator and what he has learned along the way about his profession and about life. We see him grow as a person and as a pilot. We see the world through his eyes and gain an appreciation of his accumulated experiences both funny and those no so.Anyone who has spent years looking down on the world most certainly develops a different view of things than those who meander along the surface. This is certainly true of the author who provides the reader with a sense of his understanding along the way.

When his student and close friend Oliver Smithies accepted his Nobel Prize in Medicine and Physiology, he singled Field out as someone who was important in his life, saying, "Field Morey, a distinguished flight instructor taught me to fly...but he taught me something more important than flying. He taught me that it is possible to overcome fear with knowledge." During his four years above the earth, throughout fifty-eight years of teaching more than one thousand pilots, Field overcame fear, faced weather, set records, had abundant fun...and as he puts it, "learned from my students...probably more than I taught." Since he grew up in an aviation family, it was expected that Field would fly. A contemporary of Charles Lindbergh, his father, Howard, taught him about airplanes, about operating an airport, about character and responsibility, while Lindbergh inspired him to imagine more and aim higher. Twice the FAA named Field Flight Instructor of the Year. Later, his name was added to the Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award. Along with Oliver Smithies, the pair set a world record, and when the Aviation Hall of Fame inducted him, it was a career highlight. In this memoir, Field recounts his coming-of-age in aviation and relates stories of memorable flights and remarkable adventures. With an awareness that his story is also his students' story, he recognizes the privilege of having been born when he was and pays tribute to his father, Howard Morey, an exemplary aviation pioneer, by thanking him every day for guiding him in the right direction. Yes, this is a story about flying, but it is much more. It is a study of how excellence evolves, not always in a linear progression, but with passion and vision.

Peter Sís's remarkable biography The Pilot and the Little Prince celebrates the author of The Little Prince, one of the most beloved books in the world. Antoine de Saint-Exupéry was born in France in 1900, when airplanes were just being invented. Antoine dreamed of flying and grew up to be a pilot—and that was when his adventures began. He found a job delivering mail by plane, which had never been done before. He and his fellow pilots traveled to faraway places and discovered new ways of getting from one place to the next. Antoine flew over mountains and deserts. He battled winds and storms. He tried to break aviation records, and sometimes he even crashed. From his plane, Antoine looked down on the earth and was inspired to write about his life and his pilot-hero friends in memoirs and in fiction. A Pilot S Story written by Don Volz and has been published by Trafford Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-08 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

This is my story-the story of a pilot who flew airplanes for some thirty-seven years: ten years in the United States Air Force, primarily in jet fighters, and then twenty-seven years flying commercial jet airliners. I was inspired to write this story after reading the autobiography, a few years ago, of Gen. Chuck Yeager-he being the world-renowned test pilot, World War II fighter ace, and first man to break the sound barrier in the Bell X-1. My story is the story of an average pilot, an average guy who survived several close calls, had many interesting experiences along the way, and often wondered, "Am I still here because I was especially good or because I was especially lucky?" I think the answer is definitely a combination of the two, just as Yeager says or implies in his book. With him, it may have been a larger contribution of skill, but as he said, "The secret of my success is that I always managed to live to fly another day." I have to echo that comment. While flying around the country with American Airlines, during "hours of complete boredom" (as we say), we pilots often traded our "war stories" of our flying (and other) experiences. I often thought that I had many tales that were similar to some of Yeager's and that I should put my experiences down on paper, even if it would only be my family who might read it. So this, then, is my story, my life, primarily, as it revolved around my aviating experiences over some thirty-seven years, from the viewpoint of a pilot who has no particular claim to fame but who has survived "to fly another day." One of the best descriptions of a flying career says: "You start out with a big bag of luck and an empty bag of experience; you want to fill the bag of experience before you empty the bag of luck!" I guess I have done that.

This is a courageous act of self-reflection, a firsthand meditation on one man’s surviving humanity as experience transforms to tales recited and truths gained, weaving his own path in an evolving voice into the fabric of America’s efforts in WWII, his pursuit to realize childhood dreams—the battle between the time we get in life and the earned wisdom we take from it in the ever-important hunt for what it all should mean. — Charles Clayton, screenwriter We follow a boy’s passion for flying to become one of the unsung heroes of World War II—his extensive flight training, earning navy wings of gold, being an aviator aboard the USS Franklin in the Pacific theater, deaths of friends, destruction of his ship while being the agent of destruction of the enemy (a toll he keeps to himself), the eye-opening July 4 mission, being hit, returning safely to the Franklin, only to fly two more missions that day. A must read. — John Holzapfel, past Southold Town trustee, past Oysterponds Historical Society president, educator US Navy lieutenant Robe r t Hungerford’s boyhood dream of flying led to flight training, his life on the line as a fighter aviator aboard the USS Franklin, and major battles against the Japanese war machine. Starting with an awe-inspiring moment in a desolate field in western Nebraska, the book will wing you-in Forrest Gump-like fashion-through a series of vignettes that bump into the lives of prominent historical figures like General Omar Bradley, Howard Hughes, even Hugh Heffner. Unedited and as raw as a diary, Senior Birdman jumps like a crop duster from naval pre-flight training to McDonnell Douglas to the launch of the DC-8 Jetliner to numerous fly-by commentaries about people, places, big government and life. If you loved the movie The Aviator, you'll want to climb into the cockpit with Eldon Price-pilot, aeronautical engineer, aerospace executive, and family man-and take this short, literary flight through some of aviation history's defining moments.
