Liberal democracy prevailed, ideological conflict abated, and world politics set off for the promised land of a secular, cosmopolitan, market-friendly end of history. Or so it seemed. Thirty years later, this unipolar worldview-- premised on shared values, open markets, open borders and abstract social justice--lies in tatters. What happened? David Martin Jones examines the progressive ideas behind liberal Western practice since the end of the twentieth century, at home and abroad. This mentality, he argues, took an excessively long view of the future and a short view of the past, abandoning politics in favour of ideas, and failing to address or understand rejection of liberal norms by non-Western 'others'. He explores the inevitable consequences of this liberal hubris: political and economic confusion, with the chaotic results we have seen. Finally, he advocates a return to more sceptical political thinking-- with prudent statecraft abroad, and defence of political order at home--in order to rescue the West from its widely advertised demise. Have you ever heard the expression, ‘If I told you, I would have to kill you?’ Most of the time it is said as a joke and used to spread merriment and good cheer. No one takes it seriously and usually people just laugh it off. In my case however, there would be no laughing but there certainly would be killing. But it wouldn’t be me that did the killing; it would be the government. We all know that the government has secrets and we all know that they would do whatever was necessary to keep those secrets. They would kill you in your sleep or while you were driving your car and make it look like an accident. They would even invade a sovereign nation and execute an ‘evil’ dictator. History and even current events can testify to the lengths our government would go to keep and protect their secrets. What if some of the secrets involved an ancient virus that our government wanted to use as a bioweapon? You know as well as I do that nothing would stop them from keeping that information out of the news stream. What if I told you that the government took it even further and tried to ‘enhance’ the virus? It’s completely believable, isn’t it? But what would happen if the virus mutated and completely changed the host into a ferocious killing machine? This sounds like something our government could use against its war of terror, doesn’t it? Without giving you a lot of details I can tell you that this type research is not new to our government. For decades they’ve been conducting research in hidden facilities all over the world. I’ve been on more than one mission to ‘clean up’ the mess made when the research gets out of hand. This story however, is beyond the scope of anything I had ever encountered before. The destruction I saw was almost unbelievable and the creatures I fought seemed more supernatural than natural.

"Discipleship is the heartbeat of the Christian Church. This book explores how ""following Jesus"" was understood and lived by the Lutheran Dietrich Bonhoeffer and the Baptist Arnold Ksster during the Third Reich era. Baptists and Lutherans often define the tension of being in the world but not of it in terms of two separate realms: the kingdom of God and the kingdom of the world. However, their understanding of these and their delicate connection is quite nuanced. Within the Lutheran tradition, the two kingdoms are held in tension, which in turn leads to a precarious interaction of state and church. In the (Ana)Baptist tradition, a much stricter duality is emphasized, resulting in a more radical and separatist stance. This book seeks to understand and compare the historical development of these two viewpoints and to discover how these traditions, represented in the lives of two individual followers, responded to the ideological onslaught of neopaganism and the enforced political conformity of the Third Reich. Compared to Dietrich Bonhoeffer, little is known of the Baptist preacher Arnold Ksster. His ministry as a pastor of the Baptist church in Vienna lasted from 1928-1960. During the Nazi regime, he consistently preached critically and prophetically against its underlying ideology. "

Little is known about the so-called 'Gawain poet', who wrote during the late fourteenth century. It is believed that he came from south-east Cheshire, an important cultural and economic centre at the time, and he was clearly well-read in Latin, French and English. Although he is not named as the author of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, Pearl, Patience, Cleanness, the four works have been attributed to him based on a careful comparison of their language, date and themes. Myra Stokes was formerly Senior Lecturer in the Department of English at Bristol University. Her books include Justice and Mercy in Piers Plowman and The Language of Jane Austen. Ad Putter teaches at the English Department and the Centre for Medieval Studies of the University of Bristol, where is Professor of Medieval English Literature. His monographs include Sir Gawain and the Green Knight and French Arthurian Romance and An Introduction to the Gawain Poet, and he is also co-editor of The Cambridge Companion to the Arthurian Legend.
