Segundo esse pensador, a abordagem historiográfica deve observar além dos eventos políticos e militares, promovendo a interdisciplinaridade entre as ciências humanas, particularmente a antropologia, a sociologia e a psicologia. Sua obra-prima "An Introduction to the History of Western Europe" (1902) inspirou o ensino da história no mundo inteiro.
