Although they occupy a niche in the adult entertainment and technology industries, sex robots raise complex issues that extend beyond current debates. To date, sex robots are frequently portrayed either as tools for societal liberalisation and remedies for sexual inequalities or as mediums for sexual commodification and personal degradation. These conflicting perspectives echo longstanding feminist debates, which often lead to polarisation and normative deadlock, overlooking the lived experiences of individuals beyond binary and heteronormative frameworks. The evolving legal landscape further complicates these issues. Regulatory bodies, such as the European Union, struggle to keep pace with emerging technologies and human-machine interactions. Their tendency to evaluate innovations as products with hypothetical risks – through a detached, top-down approach – fails to address the intersectional dynamics of privilege and oppression. This book enriches the conversation by moving beyond binary narratives of emancipation and oppression. This book presents an in-depth analysis of young people’s experiences of diverse drinking practices, including heavy drinking and drunkenness, as fun and pleasurable as they navigate gendered leisure spaces. Using qualitative data elicited through semi-structured interviews and focus group discussions, the analysis engages with theories and concepts of culture, gender, and transgression to foreground the roles that socio-cultural and material elements and human agency play in shaping alcohol consumption in contemporary Nigeria. It focuses on the enactment of hyper-heterosexual and alternative masculinities and the reconfigurations of passive and non-passive femininities through drinking practices. It also interrogates how and why multinational alcohol companies are targeting Nigerian women and youths and the extent to which their activities are contributing to changing gendered drinking and sexual practices, which are at odds with the extant local norms that promote abstinence, moderation among adults, and sexual purity among unmarried youths. Importantly, this book moves beyond solely Western theorizing by drawing on both Western and non-Western gender theories to analyze how contemporary Nigerian young men and women ‘do’ masculinity and femininity with alcohol and will be a valuable resource for social scientists, students, policymakers, practitioners, and the general public interested in youth drinking behaviours, multinational alcohol companies' activities, and decolonizing gender scholarship.

For more than two decades, Islamic veils, niqabs, and burkinis, forced and arranged marriages, polygamy and Sharia rules concerning women have been the object of intense public scrutiny and legal regulations in many Western countries, especially in Europe, and feminists have been actively engaged on both sides of the debates. In Feminist Trouble, Éléonore Lépinard draws on extended fieldwork with numerous women's organizations in France and Quebec. Giving voice to women of color and white women, Lépinard dissects hierarchies of privilege, in particular whiteness, in feminist politics, grappling with Islam and Islamic veiling debates to understand how these changes have transformed contemporary feminist movements, intersectional politics, and the feminist collective subject. A critical look at feminism, its divisions, and its future, Feminist Trouble argues that feminism should not be centered around an identity-women-but should instead focus on a feminist ethic of responsibility which reckons with power asymmetries and requires women to prioritize their ethical responsibility to the feminist project.
