Philosophers typically see the issue of free will and determinism in terms of a debate between two standard positions. Incompatibilism holds that freedom and responsibility require causal and metaphysical independence from the impersonal forces of nature. According to compatibilism, people are free and responsible as long as their actions are governed by their desires. In Freedom Within Reason, Susan Wolf charts a path between these traditional positions: We are not free and responsible, she argues, for actions that are governed by desires that we cannot help having. But the wish to form our own desires from nothing is both futile and arbitrary. Some of the forces beyond our control are friends to freedom rather than enemies of it: they endow us with faculties of reason, perception, and imagination, and provide us with the data by which we come to see and appreciate the world for what it is. The independence we want, Wolf argues, is not independence from the world, but independence from forces that prevent or preclude us from choosing how to live in light of a sufficient appreciation of the world. The freedom we want is a freedom within reason and the world.

God wants His children to walk in the freedom purchased for them by Christ at Calvary. Every person has been given the responsibility to make right choices in life—we must choose truth, reject lies and forgive those who hurt us—but God has not left us as orphans to fend for ourselves! The Holy Spirit gives us the power to walk in the freedom that is already ours in Christ. Following these 21 days of select readings will increase the liberating work that God has begun in you through the Steps to Freedom in Christ. Each daily devotional provides three truths—the truth about God, the truth about you and the truth about freedom—as well as recommended Scripture readings that affirm each of the three. As readers begin to hide these truths in their hearts, they will learn how to stand firm in their freedom and build a strong and holy shield against the enemy’s attacks.

This carefully crafted ebook: “THE KINGDOM OF GOD IS WITHIN YOU (One of the Most Influential Books on Nonviolent Resistance, Christianity & Inner Fate)” is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents. In the 1870s Tolstoy experienced a profound moral crisis, followed by what he regarded as an equally profound spiritual awakening, as outlined in his non-fiction work A Confession. His literal interpretation of the ethical teachings of Jesus, centering on the Sermon on the Mount, caused him to become a fervent Christian anarchist and pacifist. Tolstoy's ideas on nonviolent resistance, expressed in such works as The Kingdom of God Is Within You, were to have a profound impact on such pivotal 20th-century figures as Mohandas Gandhi, Martin Luther King, Jr., and James Bevel. In this treatise Tolstoy explains that he feels that the Church's doctrines are mistaken because they have made a “perversion” of Christ’s true teaching. He then goes on to explain what those teachings are and how one can become a true Christian in this war prone world. The title of the book is taken from Luke 17:21. In the book Tolstoy speaks of the principle of nonviolent resistance when confronted by violence, as taught by Jesus Christ. When Christ says to turn the other cheek, Tolstoy asserts that Christ means to abolish violence, even the defensive kind, and to give up revenge. Tolstoy rejects the interpretation of Roman and medieval scholars who attempted to limit its scope. “How can you kill people, when it is written in God’s commandment: 'Thou shalt not murder’?” Tolstoy took the viewpoint that all governments who waged war are an affront to Christian principles. Lonergan On Philosophic Pluralism written by Gerard Walmsley and has been published by University of Toronto Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008-12-08 with Philosophy categories.
In his influential philosophical work Insight, Bernard Lonergan made the intriguing and problematic claim that "the polymorphism of consciousness is the one and only key to philosophy." In Lonergan on Philosophical Pluralism, Gerard Walmsley examines Lonergan's many discussions of the different forms of human consciousness, as well as his sustained responses to the problems raised by philosophical and cultural pluralism. Looking closely at Lonergan's thoughts on patterns of experience, different levels of consciousness, and the differentiations of consciousness that occur through the historical development of individual human minds, Walmsley shows how polymorphic consciousness allows individuals to understand a range of philosophical positions. By understanding this range, an individual is able to sympathetically and critically appreciate different positions. Testing the strength of Lonergan's position, he directly engages postmodern thought and comparative philosophy to demonstrate that Lonergan's account of polymorphic consciousness provides a better basis for a positive evaluation of difference than does the work of many postmodern thinkers. An ambitious and soundly argued work, Lonergan on Philosophical Pluralism is both an illuminating study of Lonergan's thought, and an intriguing proposal for how difference and pluralism can be understood.

In "The Spiritual Works of Leo Tolstoy," the author delves into the profound philosophical and theological dilemmas that shaped his later life. This collection features seminal essays and reflections that grapple with the nature of faith, morality, and the human condition. Characterized by Tolstoy's characteristic depth and clarity, the literary style is both introspective and accessible, weaving personal narrative with philosophical discourse. The works critique institutional religion while advocating for a personal, experiential understanding of spiritual truth, reflecting the broader intellectual currents of 19th-century Russia, alongside emerging existentialist thought. Leo Tolstoy, a titan of literary history, is perhaps best known for monumental novels such as "War and Peace" and "Anna Karenina." However, his spiritual awakening, catalyzed by personal crises and a quest for meaning, led him to explore Christianity's essence and the moral responsibilities of individuals. His radical ideas on nonviolent resistance and social justice stem largely from his interpretation of Christian teachings, highlighting a radical departure from conventional religious practices of his time. To those seeking insight into the interplay of faith and reason, this collection is invaluable. Tolstoy's compelling arguments and piercing reflections will resonate deeply with readers who are questioning societal norms and exploring the spiritual dimensions of existence. This essential compendium encourages readers to confront their own convictions, making it a timeless guide for both seekers and skeptics.

This book outlines a model for incorporating Nietzschean thought within the structures of a wholly traditional Christological anthropology. What is perhaps even more significant is what shows up in Christological anthropology under this Nietzschean light. Using Nietzschean concepts a whole new lexicon is opened up for understanding and articulating traditional accounts of sin and fallenness, accounts which modern theology has often lacked the categories to articulate.

The Kingdom of God Is Within You is the most influential work of Christian anarchism. It might be considered the founding work of that tradition if it didn’t itself claim to merely be pointing out Christian anarchism as the plain meaning of the gospels. Tolstoy argues that institutional Christianity with its doctrines, church hierarchies, and ritual practices, is anti-Christian. Christ, he says, explicitly told his followers to reject doctrines, church institutions and hierarchies, and ritual practices, and instead to love truth, to honor God, and to treat all people as your family and as you would want to be treated. Tolstoy says that a Christian cannot participate in the political system, which is based on the use of violence to enforce the separation of people and the privileging of some people over others, and at the same time follow Jesus in his command to love your neighbor.

This book, first published in 1953, was one of the first written in English that attempted to provide a sympathetic analysis of the new movement of Existentialism. In the attempt to bring out what is of permanent value in what was at the time a study yet to gain academic recognition, it is a valuable work that presents a clear-eyed analysis from the ground up.
