Firstly, Sigmund Freud’s psychic apparatus, the defense mechanisms, the drive theory and the topographical model will be explained. Secondly, the text will be analyzed in detail by taking the former mentioned parts into consideration. The aim is to give an outline of one idea how the novel can be interpreted by analyzing the meaning of the text. According to Sigmund Freud the personality of each individual consists of three parts called the Id, Super-ego and Ego. The term Id stands for drives, needs and emotions, which are supposed to be fulfilled by the pleasure principle. This means that it longs for the immediate satisfaction of its desires. The Super-ego is understood as the counterpart of the Id and contrasts ideas of social norms, values, obedience, morals and the conscience, which are mainly acquired trough the education by the parents. Freud claims further that only after the development of the Super-ego humans are able to act responsibly and to control their initial drives. “The Super-ego is frequently characterized as an internalized code, or more popularly, as a kind of conscience, punishing transgressions with feeling of guilt” (Reber, “Dictionary of Psychology” 746). The Ego is presented as a linking part between the Id and the Super-ego. Therefore, it is supposed to be the instance, which corresponds to the reality principle, also referred to as the self-consciousness.

People who do not know the book but only its title often associate the name Frankenstein with the monster. Why do many people think that Frankenstein is the monster? The question to be discussed in this essay is if Victor and the monster are both single and independent characters or if the monster can be described as Victor Frankenstein s double. This essay is the attempt to interpret the book from a psychoanalytical point of view. The analysis refers to the major works of Sigmund Freud. At first I describe and explain some basic knowledge of Sigmund Freud, such as his model of personality or rather the mental apparatus with its three organisational units ID, EGO and SUPEREGO. After that I name some tools the EGO can use, called Ego Defence Mechanisms, but this is only done very generally. The human drives have to be mentioned and explained because they are very important for the question to be discussed. Because Victor Frankenstein s life is analysed chronologically the psychosexual development has to be referred to, too. Last but not least Freud s conception of the human psyche is mentioned and explained. It is important to say that I always refer to Freud when speaking about psychoanalytical expressions in this essay, even when they are not always named as those. For a long period, Mary Shelley languished in the shadow of her luminary husband, Percy Bysshe Shelley, but was rescued from obscurity by the feminist scholars of the 1970s and 1980s. This book offers a new perspective on Shelley and on science fiction, arguing that she both established a new discursive space for moral thinking and laid the groundwork for the genre of science fiction. Adopting a contextual biographical approach and undertaking a close reading of the 1818 and 1831 editions of the text give readers insight into how this story synthesizes many of the concerns about new science prevalent in Shelley's time.
