Excerpt from A Friendly Germany, Why Not? No attempt has been made in the following pages to deal exhaustively with the subject of anglo-german relations. My object has been to suggest new trains of thought and to put a new point of view to those who, either from want of due consideration or from the habit of reading in the Press and elsewhere alarmist reports of German hostility, have come to the regrettable conclusion that war between Great Britain and Germany is inevitable and impending. I have tried to show not only that there is no foundation for such a view, but that, for the sake of Western civilisation in particular and of the world in general, it is desirable that the two countries should be united by a close bond of friendship, and essential that they should not be parted by an artificial agitation. I have received a great deal of help in the preparation of this book from friends in England and Germany, and have much pleasure in acknow ledging it. Excerpt from The Rise and Decline of the Free Trade Movement The story of the rise and decline of the Free Trade movement has a practical bearing which renders it a matter of general interest at the present time; but it has also a special attraction for students of political phenomena. The agitation may be said to have been unique, for it had its basis in a scientific doctrine. The history of all ages of the world has shewn the play of human aspirations and passions, of racial an tipathies and moral ideals; but it was left for the eighteenth century to make a great advance in formu lating the knowledge of human society and of the conditions of its prosperity. The Free Trade move ment as a political force owed its strength to the fact that it had a scientific character: this seems also to account for its limitations and defects. The extensive scope of this collection means that this documentary record of the reception of German literature in England is a valuable scholarly resource. One of the most important features of British literary and intellectual history over the past 250 years is the influence of German literature. From the second half of the 18th Century, through the first decades of the 19th, German books and ideas attracted, then gained the attention of a nation. Despite the acknowledged importance of the influence on writers such as Coleridge and Carlyle the subject, though often alluded to, was rarely studied. This collection provides a guidebook through the masses of periodical and allows the English side of the Anglo-German literary relationship to be explored in detail. In order to make the collection useful to scholars with a wide range of interest, it has been divided into three parts: Part 1 is a chronological presentation of commentary on German literature in general. It also contains collective reviews of multiple German authors, notices of important anthologies and reactions to influential works about Germany and its culture. Part 2 collects reviews of 18th Century individual German authors and Part 3 is devoted to the English reception of Goethe and Schiller. Parts 2 & 3 contain cross-references to the collective reviews of Part 1. Containing over 200 British serials and articles and reviews from all the major English literary periodicals, the collection also includes a broad sampling of opinion from the more general magazines, including some popular religious publications.
