Excerpt from A Short History of the World This short history OF the world is meant to be read straight forwardly almost as a novel is read. It gives in the most general way an account of our present knowledge of history, shorn of elabora tions and complications. It has been amply illustrated and every thing has been done to make it vivid and clear. From it the reader should be able to get that general View of history which is so neces sary a framework for the study of a particular period or the history of a particular country. It may be found useful as a preparatory excursion before the reading of the author's much fuller and more explicit Outline of History is undertaken. But its especial end is to meet the needs of the busy general reader, too driven to study the maps and time charts of that Outline in detail, Who Wishes to refresh and repair his faded or fragmentary conceptions of the great adventure of mankind. It is not an abstract or condensation of that former work. Within its aim the Outline admits of no further. Excerpt from Outlines of General History There are three histories: 1. The Unrecorded - not therefore of necessity forgotten - remaining forever in the mind of the All-creating and All-knowing One, who seeth the end from the beginning; who noteth the fall of the sparrow as well as the defeat of armies and the ruin of empires; and who alone comprehendeth the beginning, the end, and the reason and purpose.of both the beginning and end. 2. The Monumental, which in deeds of creative energy, human and divine, suggests, power and purpose in suns and stars, sea and soil, pillar, pyramid, and city. 3. The Written, which by stylus, chisel, brush, or pen, preserves in human language the human interpretations of both human and divine movements. This little volume, belonging to this latter class, aims to present in varied methods rapid pictures of the world in different ages and in different lands, and to call attention not only to the outward events, but to some of the underlying principles of all history. Excerpt from World History The scope, character, and purpose of this textbook perhaps require some clarification here. It covers the entire historic field, together with a chapter on prehistoric times; it presents a survey of human progress, rather than a chronological outline of events; it is intended for that large body of students who, for various reasons, do not take more than one year of history in the high school. They ought to gain from such a course, however brief, some conception of social development and some realization Of man's upward march from the Stone Age until the present time. Nothing but general or universal history will give them that conception, that realization. And only a history of the world will enable them to appreciate the contributions made by peoples widely separated in space and time to what is steadily becoming the common civilization of mankind. About two thirds of the book are devoted to the last three centuries. This period furnishes the immediate historical background Of the life of to-day: it is therefore the period ordinarily most interesting and profitable to the student. The chapters dealing with it are reproduced, with some abbrevia tion, from my Modern European History. The other chapters are based on my Early European History, but they contain much that is new, both in the text and also by way of maps and illustrations. Excerpt from The Modern World Necessary, of course, to allude to the salient or turn ing points of general history, and to the memorable events of all times and places which have contri buted to the development of the nations that exist; but it will be necessary, at the same time, to shorten the pictures by abridgment, and to omit not only events and deeds of secondary importance, but also all the unnecessary appendages appertaining to deeds of primary magnitude. The multitude of facts to pick from is immense but we must not get entangled among them. We want those particulars only that elucidate the dependence of the different countries on each other, and account for their pres ent relative positions. The history of England is, or ought to be, familiar to all our readers, and no regular narration of events appertaining to it will therefore be attempted. But some cursory allusion to the principal events of other countries must be made, Since the English reader generally is not very conversant with them. Excerpt from Elements of General History: Embracing All the Leading Events in the World's History From the Earliest Period to the End of the Late Civil War in the United States Works on History have had their usefulness much impaired by the introduction of too many names, dates and details which give no valuable information. The multiplicity of these is apt to confuse the mind, and make the study itself dry and uninteresting. This evil the author has endeavored to avoid. Excerpt from Hand-Book of Chronology and History: The World's Progress, a Dictionary of Dates; With Tabular Views of General History, and a Historical Chart The alphabetical part of the volume gives, in most cases, more full and ample references to the same historical 'facts; but still the whole work is but an index to the sources of knowledge - a Diction ary of Dates. It has been planned so as to facilitate access to the largest amount of useful information in the smallest possible compass. There are some discrepancies among the authorities, as to names and dates - especially in the Middle Ages - and in some instances the dictionary varies from the tables; but these instances are not numerous or important.
