Excerpt from A General History of the World, Vol. 3 Popular Reaction against the Spirit of Conquest repro sented by Napoleon - The revolution of 1688 in England remained wholly English, so it did not leave its own island. The French Revolution was cosmopolitan. The members of the French National Assembly, not merely solicitous of the ancient liberties of the country, had the larger idea of rights common to all men united in society. Thus they placed the Declaration of Rights as a preamble to the Constitution of 1791. They thought of humanity no less than of France. This largeness of view constituted the grandeur and also the misery of the French Revolution. As a result the new order of things emerged from the past only with frightful throes. Excerpt from A General History of the World, Vol. 2 Below the warlike society of the lords was the toiling society of the villeins and serfs. The freemen had dis appeared. The villeins, or free tenants, and the serfs cultivated the land for the lord under the shadow of the feudal keep around which they clustered, and which sometimes defended but more often Oppressed them. The villein had only to pay his fixed rents like a farmer and to perform the least onerous forced labor. He could not be detached from the land which had been assigned him to cultivate, but he had the right to hold it as his own. As for the serfs, The sire, says Pierre de Fontaine, can take all that they have, can hold their bodies in prison whenever he pleases, and is forced to answer therefor only to God alone. In spite of this the condition of the serf was better than that of the slave in antiquity. He was regarded as a man. He had a family. The Church, which declared him a son of Adam, made him, before God at least, the equal of the proud est lords. Excerpt from The World's History and Its Makers, Vol. 3 The traditions of nearly all the older nations of the world in describing; the creation of land by the gods, tell oi the fierce opposition of the sea, which is usually personified as a mighty demon or demi-god waging unsuccessful warfare against the new element. Some traces of these traditions lasted in the minds of most of the people of Europe until comparatively modern times. Long after philosophers had replaced myth with more reasonable theology, long after they were convinced that the earth was a sphere, there remained in the mind of the masses superstitious fears of terrible sea monsters who could devour the largest ships with case. Even the map-makers decorated the unknown deep with pictures of the behemoth and leviathan, which were a terror to seamen. This dread of the deep was not unreasonable in a primitive people whose strongest vessels were mere cockleshells. Nothing in nature is more awe-inspiring than the tempest-tossed deep and one can easily imagine the hardihood required of sailors who believed the sea to be controlled by the variable temper of their gods. Nevertheless it is not a little remarkable that the ancient nations which have left us such priceless heritages in the fine arts, the sciences, literature and philosophy, did so little in exploring the sea. Excerpt from History of the World From the Earliest Period to the Present Time, Vol. 3: Collected and Arranged From the Best Authorities He remained in the Netherlands from his accession in 1555 till August, 1559, when he embarked for Spain, and never afterwards returned. The measures he introduced dur ing his stay, his repulsive manners, and the humors he displayed at his departure, all tended to strengthen that aversion, mingled with suspicion, which had begun to manifest itself during the reign of his imperial pre decessor. Excerpt from The History of the World, Vol. 3 of 8: A Survey of Man's Record; West Asia and Africa Homes of an ancient and mighty but long-vanished civilization. This tendency was well expressed, after too optimistic a fashion it is true, in the remarkable preamble to the Hattisherif of Culhane more than sixty years ago: If we but consider the geographical location of Turkish Asia, the fertility of its soil, the skill and intelligence of its inhabitants, we may feel assured that if only the effort be made to discover the right means, the goal which with the help of God we are striving to attain will, in the course of a few years, be reached. Excerpt from General History of the World, From the Earliest Times Until the Year 1831, Vol. 4 of 4: Translated From the German, and Continued to 1840 There is no greater event than the French revolution, and indeed hardly one equally great, in the history of the world. The old empires of the world were, it is true, founded and over thrown with noise, and these changes were felt far, and for a long course of years; but they were rather the result of physical forces than the effect of those of intellect, and even in this last hypothesis, they were produced only by the forces of reason, and for the gratification of common passions, such as avidity for plunder, love of glory or dominion, but not by moral motives, not by the power of ideas. In the foundation of the universal monarchy of Mohammed and Hildebrand, and in the Crusades, we discover, it is true, the action of ideas; but it is the action of ideas of fanaticism and superstition. The establishment of Christianity, finally, as well as the great inventions of writing and printing, have indeed produced manifold changes in the world; but these changes were effected either gradually and silently, or in complication with many other events which were rolled on by the stream of time. The French revolution, on the contrary, shook suddenly and omnipotently the part Of the world on which it was born; it also hurled its thunders to all others, and from its origin, it is almost alone the object of contemplation upon the whole theatre of the world's history. Only one revolution may be compared with this latest - the6 introduction. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
