"A Gentle Introduction to Stata, Second Edition is aimed at new Stata users who want to become proficient in Stata. After reading this introductory text, new users will not only be able to use Stata well but also learn new aspects of Stata easily. Acock assumes that the user is not familiar with any statistical software. This assumption of a blank slate is central to the structure and contents of the book. Acock starts with the basics; for example, the portion of the book that deals with data management begins with a careful and detailed example of turning survey data on paper into a Stata-ready dataset on the computer. When explaining how to go about basic exploratory statistical procedures, Acock includes notes that should help the reader develop good work habits. This mixture of explaining good Stata habits and good statistical habits continues throughout the book. Acock is quite careful to teach the reader all aspects of using Stata. He covers data management, good work habits (including the use of basic do-files), basic exploratory statistics (including graphical displays), and analyses using the standard array of basic statistical tools (correlation, linear and logistic regression, and parametric and nonparametric tests of location and dispersion). Acock teaches Stata commands by using the menus and dialog boxes while still stressing the value of do-files. In this way, he ensures that all types of users can build good work habits. Each chapter has exercises that the motivated reader can use to reinforce the material. The tone of the book is friendly and conversational without ever being glib or condescending. Important asides and notes about terminology are set off in boxes, which makes the text easy to read without any convoluted twists or forward-referencing. Rather than splitting topics by their Stata implementation, Acock chose to arrange the topics as they would be in a basic statistics textbook; graphics and postestimation are woven into the material in a natural fashion. Real datasets, such as the General Social Surveys from 2002 and 2006, are used throughout the book. The focus of the book is especially helpful for those in psychology and the social sciences, because the presentation of basic statistical modeling is supplemented with discussions of effect sizes and standardized coefficients. Various selection criteria, such as semipartial correlations, are discussed for model selection. The second edition of the book has been updated to reflect new features in Stata 10 and includes a new chapter on the use of factor analysis to develop valid, reliable scale measures."--Publisher's website.

A Gentle Introduction to Stata, Fourth Edition is for people who need to learn Stata but who may not have a strong background in statistics or prior experience with statistical software packages. After working through this book, you will be able to enter, build, and manage a dataset, and perform fundamental statistical analyses. This book is organized like the unfolding of a research project. You begin by learning how to enter and manage data and how to do basic descriptive statistics and graphical analysis. Then you learn how to perform standard statistical procedures from t tests, nonparametric tests, and measures of association through ANOVA, multiple regression, and logistic regression. Readers who have experience with another statistical package may benefit more by reading chapters selectively and referring to this book as needed. The fourth edition has incorporated numerous changes that were new with Stata 13. Coverage of the marginsplot command has expanded. This simplifies the construction of compelling graphs. There is a new chapter showing how to estimate path models using the sem (structural equation modeling) command. Menus have been updated, and several minor changes and corrections have been included based on suggestions from readers.

A practical guide to using modern software effectively in quantitative research in the social and natural sciences. This book offers a practical guide to the computational methods at the heart of most modern quantitative research. It will be essential reading for research assistants needing hands-on experience; students entering PhD programs in business, economics, and other social or natural sciences; and those seeking quantitative jobs in industry. No background in computer science is assumed; a learner need only have a computer with access to the Internet. Using the example as its principal pedagogical device, the book offers tried-and-true prototypes that illustrate many important computational tasks required in quantitative research. The best way to use the book is to read it at the computer keyboard and learn by doing. The book begins by introducing basic skills: how to use the operating system, how to organize data, and how to complete simple programming tasks. For its demonstrations, the book uses a UNIX-based operating system and a set of free software tools: the scripting language Python for programming tasks; the database management system SQLite; and the freely available R for statistical computing and graphics. The book goes on to describe particular tasks: analyzing data, implementing commonly used numerical and simulation methods, and creating extensions to Python to reduce cycle time. Finally, the book describes the use of LaTeX, a document markup language and preparation system.

Applied Multivariate Statistical Analysis In Medicine written by Jingmei Jiang and has been published by Elsevier this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-08-21 with Science categories.
Applied Multivariate Statistical Analysis in Medicine provides a multivariate conceptual framework that allows readers to understand the interconnectivity and interrelations among variables, which maintains the intrinsic precision of statistical theories. With a strong focus on the fundamental concepts of multivariate statistical analysis, the book also gives insight into the applications of multivariate distribution in biomedical fields. In 14 chapters, Applied Multivariate Statistical Analysis in Medicine covers the main topics of multivariate analysis methods widely used in health science research. The content is organized progressively from fundamental concepts to sophisticated methods. It begins with basic descriptive statistics in multivariate analysis and follows with parameter estimation, in addition to the hypothesis testing of a multivariate normal distribution, which has heavy applications in biomedical fields where the relationships among approximately normal variables are of great interest. Keeping mathematics to a minimum, considerable emphasis is placed on explanations and real-world applications of core principles to maintain a good balance between introducing theory and cultivating problem-solving skills. This book is a very valuable reference text for clinicians, medical researchers, and other researchers across medical and biomedical disciplines, all of whom confront increasingly complex statistical methods during the analysis and presentation of their results. - Gives understanding and mastering of the multivariate analysis techniques in the medical sciences - Maintains a balance between the introduction of statistical analysis theory and the cultivation of practical skills - Exposes a variety of well-designed real-life cases that integrate concepts and analytical techniques - Includes substantive exercises, online coding sources, and case discussions to solidify a conceptual understanding

Revisiting Economic Vulnerability In Old Age written by Julia Henke and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-03-04 with Political Science categories.
This book offers an interdisciplinary analysis of the experience of economic vulnerability among older adults. Drawing on various fields ranging from happiness, economics to stress research, it integrates assessments from objective and subjective measurement perspectives. The book offers nuanced insights into prevalent experiences of low economic quality of life in wealthy countries, using empirical data from Switzerland. A sample of some 1500 adults aged 65-84 is taken as the basis for a systematic comparison of the demographic and socioeconomic characteristics of three – overlapping – groups of potentially vulnerable pensioners: those who are income-poor (objective measure), those who report difficulties making ends meet (subjectively self-assessed measure) and those who worry about not having enough money for current expenses (subjectively perceived measure). Theoretical and empirical evidence is offered for the distinctiveness of the two subjective indicators, one of which assesses the experience of economic strain while the other captures the individual’s response in terms of stress. The conceptual contribution of this research includes a typology of economic vulnerability: eight distinct profiles emerge at the intersection of the objective, self-assessed and perceived measures. These profiles correspond to specific risk constellations, and they reflect varying degrees of human agency in dealing with economic vulnerability.
