A problemática que motiva a realização deste livro incide sobre o modo com o qual, na ciência geográfica, notadamente a partir da assimilação da fenomenologia no contexto da constituição da Geografia humanista na década de 1970, se estabeleceu um perfil de interlocução entre os geógrafos com Heidegger que se efetivou buscando compatibilizar seu pensamento com o humanismo. Esse perfil de interlocução, contudo, não se limitou à gênese do horizonte humanista, mas se reproduziu, décadas a fio, entre os geógrafos, passando solenemente ao largo da crassa incompatibilidade entre toda e qualquer modulação do pensamento humanista com o modo estrito com que Heidegger interpreta a fenomenologia, a saber, como método precípuo para a investigação ontológica-fundamental. Não obstante contribuições de geógrafos tenham evidenciado criticamente – desde meados da década de 1980 – a extensão e as consequências desse extravio, ele permaneceu alimentando uma gama insuspeita da doxa majoritária de publicações entre os geógrafos. Dessa forma – e aqui reside o argumento central do livro – foram comprometidos o alcance e o significado que o diálogo com Heidegger poderiam assumir para a Geografia, porquanto se desarticulou do elemento decisivo que, sugere-se, constitui o propósito primordial da intersecção entre uma ciência particular com o filósofo: a reabilitação da investigação das bases ontológico-existenciais da respectiva ciência.
