This book provides historians and genealogists with a one-stop guide to every Civil War–related manuscript collection stored in Georgia’s many repositories. With this guide in hand, researchers will no longer spend countless hours pouring through online catalogs, emailing archivists, and wondering if they have exhausted every lead in their pursuit of firsthand information about the war and the experiences of those who lived through and were impacted by it. In assembling the first state-specific bibliography to be compiled since the Indiana and Illinois bibliographies were assembled for the Civil War Centennial in the 1960s, David Slay has expanded the scope of this survey to include works relating to women, African Americans, and social history, as well as the letters and diaries of soldiers who fought in the war, reflecting society’s evolving understanding and interest in this defining period of American life. In addition, this compilation is not confined to material produced from 1861 to 1865, but also includes collections spanning the lives of prominent Civil War figures, making it an invaluable source for biographers. Organized by institution, Georgia Civil War Manuscript Collections has many time-saving features, all designed to increase efficiency of research. Each collection description contains the title and catalog number used in the holding institution. Where possible, collection descriptions have been improved upon, providing the researcher with information beyond what is listed in the holding institution’s card catalog and finding aid. It also cross-references duplicate collections that are held in two or more institutions as microfilm or photocopies. Simply put, Georgia Civil War Manuscript Collections takes the mystery out of Civil War research in Georgia.

Keep All My Letters written by Richard Henry Brooks and has been published by Mercer University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

In May 1862, Richard Henry Brooks of Blakely, Georgia, enlisted in the Confederate Army for the duration of the war, serving in Longstreet's Corps. He would see his wife and family only once in the next three years. He would suffer hardship and deprivation, become hospitalized, participate in one of the grandest Confederate victories of the war, and be captured and held prisoner for almost a year. He wrote his wife Telitha regularly. He told her repeatedly to save all his letters, which she did, and they are published in this book. These letters give considerable insight into Confederate homelife in southwest Georgia during the war. Brooks gives Telitha advice on the daily details of running the household. He tells her who to go to for help, how to obtain enough corn and pork for the winter, how to handle their slaves, and what supplies to send him in the field. He advises her on the children and directs the children to behave. These glimpses into the homelife of Confederate Georgia grant us a clearer understanding of how people far from the battlefields were still affected by the war.

Perhaps no army in history, prior to the American Civil War, left such a remarkable and voluminous collection of letters to home during the years 1861 to 1865. This collection is one of the best. Men from all walks of life and all ranks in the service are represented here over the span of the entire war. The famous and anonymous are included—personal stories of great battles and humorous stories of army life. You'll find pathos, sorrow, fear, and great courage detailed in these letters. Iconoclastic Memories Of The Civil War Expanded Annotated written by Ambrose Bierce and has been published by BIG BYTE BOOKS this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on with History categories.

Perhaps no writer who fought in the American Civil War left as eloquent, humorous, and sorrowful a record of the soldier's life as did famous writer, Ambrose Bierce. As he states, this account of several battles in which he was an officer centers around his person and observations. But what an observer! Written nearly 50 years after the war, Bierce captures the horror, confusion, disastrous mistakes, and humor of the war from ground level. He was a soldier at Shiloh, Franklin, and at many other battles of the Civil War. Seriously wounded in the head at Kennesaw Mountain he was out of action for several months but returned to service. Late in his life, Bierce disappeared without a trace in Mexico. The mystery of his disappearance has never been solved. There is not another Civil War memoir quite like this. With his wonderful economy of style, his cynical wit, and his passion for the subject, Bierce left one of the most remarkable, if short, autobiographies of the war. Every memoir of the American Civil War provides us with another view of the catastrophe that changed the country forever. Tales Of War Times written by Thomas Hinds and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-12-14 with categories.

With his colloquial language and inconsistent spelling, Thomas Hinds tells his story as a cavalry corporal in the American Civil War. Like many teenagers of his generation, he lied about his age and was repeatedly turned down for enlistment until he finally got into 1st Maryland Cavalry, Company A.The list of this company's engagements is extensive and Hinds saw lots of action. He was eventually captured and imprisoned in the notorious Andersonville Prison. He escaped and was aided back to Sherman's army by African-Americans who risked their lives to help Yankees. The last lines in this lovely Civil War memoir are:"I will always remember the kindness of the slaves to me during my five weeks travelling through Georgia. They were always true and helped many a Union soldier in distress. I will always have a kindly feeling for those people; but for them I should never have succeeded in making my final escape to Sherman's army."

From April 17 to May 2, 1863, one of the most daring Union actions took place as a diversion to Grant's Vicksburg campaign. A cavalry force of 1,700 men under Colonel Benjamin Grierson rode six hundred miles through Rebel territory to tear up railroads, free slaves, and destroy Confederate supplies as special forces. The raiders seemed unstoppable and caused great damage, inflicting many times the casualties on the enemy as were inflicted upon themselves. This is the story of that guerrilla raid, by those who were there and verified by Grierson. This book also tells the story of the scout, Chickasaw, a southerner loyal to the Union who risked his life to help the Federal troops. A remarkable woman relates a decade lived more fully than the entire lifetimes of any ten of her contemporaries. The daughter of an American general, married to the love of her life, she followed her husband throughout the Civil War and then to more adventures abroad. She was an American married to Prince Felix Salm-Salm, a Prussian soldier of nobility who volunteered his services for the Union cause in the Civil War. During the war, Princess Agnes tended to the wounded and dying on the battlefield. But she also met Abraham Lincoln, kissed him, and offers one of the most interesting descriptions of him. The post-war period found Prince Salm-Salm in service to Emperor Maximilian I of Mexico. With indomitable courage, Princess Agnes worked to get her husband out of prison when he was captured with Maximilian. Escaping execution, the pair left for Europe. There they met with Bismarck, Wilhelm I, Lord and Lady Palmerston, and many other notables. During the Franco-Prussian War, Agnes once again found herself caring for soldiers near the front while her husband was serving in battle. Crushed when he was killed, she nevertheless continued service until the end of the war. With her nerves frayed and her health failing, she seriously considered joining a nunnery. Settling in Germany, she penned this amazing memoir of a life lived ten-fold. Despite her traumas and sorrows, her lively and attractive intelligence shines through her writing with wit and irony. For the first time ever, this long-out-of-print book is available as an affordable, well-formatted book for e-readers and smartphones. Be sure to LOOK INSIDE or download a sample.
