Excerpt from A German Reader With German Exercises Based Upon the Text: For First Reading in German The Opinion is growing yearly that beginners in foreign languages Should not be set to reading scraps, but should begin directly upon complete pieces of moderate length and of worthy literary quality. Great numbers of such stories and plays are now accessible in separate editions, but a book like the present Reader has the advantages that it saves the annoyance of several separate purchases, offers a given number of selections at less expense, and that it can present them in a wise gradation. The Exercises following and based upon the text are also carefully graded. (1) The sentences in German with the various inflections to be supplied can be taken up by the time the student has learned the declensions and the Simpler verb-forms. (2) The English versions of the original to be turned back into German are more advanced, but yet comparatively easy, because the vocabulary and the constructions are all found in the original German. (3) The German questions leading to an outline of the original in the student's own words call for more ingenuity, but the material for the answers is all in the original German or in the exercises of the second kind. As a rule all these exercises should be prepared by the student at home. The poems are suited to memorizing and should be used largely in this way. Excerpt from Newson's German Reader The pupil passes, as a rule, from the beginner's book to the reading of stories which are foreign to his thought. He is provided with a german-english dictionary. He is given a lesson so long that he cannot assimilate it. Little work is assigned for preparation which will help to a mastery of the vocabul and idioms. He may have a few sen tenoes in glish, based upon the text, to translate into German, an exercise which is apt to signify little more than a series of mental gymnastics and the cultivation of memory. It is no wonder that the teacher awakes, after two or three ears of this kind of work, to find that his pupils 100 at German through the same glasses as at Caesar or the cam basis, and think the modern language a snap, because they can translate it more easlly and guess at the construction with deadlier accuracy. Modern languages, so taught and so regarded, W111 not take the place of Latin and Greek as preparatory studies.
