Excerpt from A Glossary of Terms Used in English Architecture Thus the Orders and Basilicas are described, but not Roman baths. A few other words of this class are included on account of their intrinsic interest and because they are omitted from many books. It is hardly necessary to say that I am deeply indebted to the published works of others. I have briefly but I trust sufficiently acknowledged this in each case. Where I am more peculiarly indebted to any one work I have made a fuller acknowledgment at the end of \the article. Excerpt from A Glossary of Terms Used in English Architecture This little book is limited to the historical aspect of Architecture, and only deals incidentally with words used in art and art criticism and in building. But at the same time many technical terms are to be found, and constructional terms in particular; for construction lies at the very root of the matter. More attention than is usual in books of this kind is devoted to that part of the subject which bears on social and religious life. Thus more space is given to houses and churches and proportionately less to purely architectural terms such as capitals and vaults. Definitions are in most cases unnecessary; they are sometimes given, as in arch, because it is interesting to work out a definition; and this particular instance, by the by, illustrates the importance I attach to construction. Derivations are given where they are illuminating or curious. When there has been a choice the most familiar word or form of word has generally been adopted without much regard to philology on the one hand or to medieval use or monkish slang on the other. Many terms used in Greek and Roman architecture are included because they are necessary to a proper understanding of Renaissance architecture and church-building. For this reason the general principle has been to include those terms which have a direct bearing on English architecture, whether they deal with decorative forms or with the planning of buildings. Excerpt from A Concise Glossary of Terms: Used in Grecian, Roman, Italian, and Gothic Architecture It not unfrequently happens that the Abacus is nearly or quite the only part of a capital on which mouldings can be found to shew its date: it is therefore deserving of considerable attention. Excerpt from A Glossary of English Furniture of the Historic Periods The output of books upon furniture, English and foreign, has of late years acquired a very large volume, and the work of almost every period has been described and illustrated, often many times over. But amid this extensive and ever-growing literature there 13 still no work of reference which, with simplicity and brevity and in a handy form, defines the meaning and scope of the technical terms and historical allusions to be found upon almost every page of any book dealing with furniture. N 0 subject, and this, perhaps, least of all, can profitably be studied without a clear understanding of the descriptive language which has grown up around it. Dictionaries are of little help to the general reader and of still less to the student, and the lack of anything in the nature of a reasonably full and systematic Glossary of English Furniture, embodying the names and dates of the great exemplars of the famous English styles, led the authors to make this attempt to fill the gap. Classical Architecture written by Curl James Stevens and has been published by W. W. Norton & Company this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003-04-29 with Architecture categories.

This well-illustrated book describes the fundamental principles and various aspects of classical architecture, including a detailed, illustrated glossary that is almost a dictionary of classical architecture in itself. Professor James Stevens Curl discusses in clear, straightforward language the origins of classical architecture in Greek and Roman antiquity and outlines its continuous development, through its various manifestations during the Renaissance, its transformations in Baroque and Rococo phases, its reemergence in eighteenth-, nineteenth-, and twentieth-century Neoclassicism, and its survival into the modern era. The text and illustrations celebrate the richness of the classical architectural vocabulary, grammar, and language, and demonstrate the enormous range of themes and motifs found in the subject. All those who wish to look at buildings old and new with an informed eye will find in this book a rich fund of material, and the basis for an understanding of a fecund source of architectural design that has been at the heart of western culture for over two and a half millennia.
