Excerpt from A Grammar of Belief: A Revaluation of the Bases of Christian Belief in the Light of Modern Science and Philosophy That is precisely why so many of them become agnostic. If they didn't care, they might go on repeating with thought less lips old platitudes, without ever wondering whether the new learning was going to fit them. It is because they do care enough about religion to require that it shall be true, that they turn from it when it seems to be discredited. Examining the roots of the relationship between literature and theology, this book offers the first serious attempt to probe the deep theological purposes of the study of literature. Through an exploration of themes of evil, forgiveness, sacrament and what it means to be human, David Jasper draws from international research and discussions on literature and theology and employs an historical and profoundly personal journey through the later part of the last century up to the present time. Combining fields such as bible and literature, poetry and sacrament, this book sheds new light on how Christian theology seeks to remain articulate in our global, secular and multi-faith culture.

The papers in this collection present a diversity of views on the epistemology of religious belief. There is a diversity of views about the intelligibility of particular religious beliefs: for example, about the reality of God's existence and of miracles. There is further disagreement concerning the reasonableness of religious belief itself. Some contributors argue that locating grounds for believing in God is still a fruitful undertaking. Both issues raise the problem of the philosopher's position vis-a-vis religious belief. Are philosophers in a privileged position to determine either the reasonableness or the intelligibility of religious belief? Or is philosophy, properly understood, a descriptive task? The papers in this collection present a diversity of views on this issue, too. Drawing on the works of Kierkegaard, a few of the contributors argue that philosophical description cannot be neatly divorced from religious persuasion. Whatever their views on these issues, however, the contributors accept that philosophical discussion cannot proceed very far without attention to what religious believers say about their beliefs and the practices in which they take part.

D. Z. Phillips is a leading figure in advocating a Wittgensteinian approach to the philosophical study of religion. His writings exert an important influence on contemporary philosophy of religion, giving a new direction to the philosophical discussion of religious belief and practice. Although his work has prompted much - often critical - comment, a thorough investigation has not been forthcoming. Grammars of Faith fills that gap. The book pays close attention to Wittgenstein's own remarks on religious belief, arranging them against the background of his broader philosophical methodology, as well as to the efforts of the early Wittgensteinians at providing a more comprehensive Wittgensteinian philosophy of religion. Central to this study are Phillips's understanding of philosophical enquiry as a form of contemplation, and his descriptive accounts of religious belief. By means of a careful and methodical examination of Phillips's oeuvre, the study seeks to present a fair assessment of Phillips's position, showing not only its weaknesses, but also its strength.

"An Essay in Aid of a Grammar of Assent" is a philosophical work by John Henry Newman, first published in 1870. In this book, Newman explores the nature of faith and the process of belief formation, offering a sophisticated analysis of how individuals come to assent to propositions, particularly in matters of religion. The central thesis of the book is Newman's argument that assent, or the act of believing, involves more than just logical reasoning or evidence-based argumentation. Instead, he emphasizes the role of what he terms the "illative sense" - a faculty of the mind that enables individuals to make intuitive leaps in belief, even in the absence of conclusive evidence. Newman contends that this faculty operates on a deeper level than mere intellect, drawing on a combination of reason, intuition, and personal experience. Newman also discusses the distinction between formal logic and what he calls "real apprehension." While formal logic deals with the consistency and coherence of propositions, real apprehension involves grasping the truth and significance of those propositions in a more holistic sense. Newman argues that this form of apprehension is essential for understanding religious truths, which often transcend the boundaries of empirical evidence and logical demonstration. Throughout the book, Newman engages with various objections to religious belief, including skepticism, atheism, and religious pluralism. He defends the rationality of faith, asserting that while it may not always be possible to provide irrefutable proof for religious propositions, there are still compelling reasons for assenting to them. "An Essay in Aid of a Grammar of Assent" is characterized by its nuanced exploration of the psychology of belief and its emphasis on the role of personal conviction in matters of faith. It remains a significant work in the fields of epistemology, philosophy of religion, and theology, influencing subsequent thinkers and provoking ongoing discussion about the nature of religious belief and its justification.
