Excerpt from A Grammar of the English Language In preparing this book it has been the purpose of the author to make a concise school grammar of English, designed for use in schools in which there is need of a brief, systematic course in the subject. No attempt is made to tell everything. In the exercises will be found abundant material for elaboration; and where grammatical terms are introduced in advance of later treatment, the teacher will give such oral explanation as may be deemed necessary. From the first exercise the pupil is introduced to the sentence as a whole, but no definition or classification of the sentence is attempted until the subject is reached in regular order. So, too, under Case, the various uses of the cases are shown, but no definition of case is attempted. The author agrees with Matthew Arnold that, if you wish the class to know what an apple is, the best way is to show them an apple rather than try to give an idea of it after the manner of the books: "An apple has a stalk, peel, pulp, core, pips, and juice; it is odorous and opaque, and is used for making a pleasant drink called cider." Part I. is intended to provide a rapid review of the parts of speech, and may be omitted, at the discretion of the teacher, with more advanced classes. Excerpt from The Principles of English Grammar: The Substance of All the Most Approved English Grammars Extant, Briefly Defined, and Neatly Arranged Orthography is mentioned rather for the sake of order, than from a conviction of its utility; for, in my opinion, to occupy thirty or forty pages of a Grammar in defining the sounds of the alphabet, is quite preposterous. On Etymology I have lefl much to be remarked by the teacher in the time of teaching. My reason for doing this is, that children, when by themselves, labour more to have the words of their book imprinted on their memories, than to have the meaning fixed in their minds; but, on the contrary, when the teacher addresses them viva voce, they naturally strive rather to comprehend his meaning, than to remember his exact expressions. In pursuance of this idea, the first part of this little volume has been thrown into a form more resembling heads of Lectures on Grammar, than a complete elucidation of the subject. That the teacher, however, may not be always under the necessity of having recourse to his memory to supply the deficiencies, the most remarkable observations have been subjoined at the bottom of the page, to which the pupils themselves may occasionally be referred. An Auxiliary Verb is one which helps to form the Moods and Tenses of other verbs. 250. The auxiliary verbs are. Shall, May, Can, Must, Be, Do, Have, and Will. Note 1.--Be, do, have, and will are also used as principal verbs. Note 2.--These are called Auxiliary, or helping verbs, because by their help the other verbs form most of their moods and tenses.
