Mapuche is the language of the Mapuche (or Araucanians), the native inhabitants of central Chile. The Mapuche language, also called Mapudungu, is spoken by about 400,000 people in Chile and 40,000 in Argentina. The Mapuche people, estimated at about one million, constitute the majority of the Chilean indigenous population. The history of the Mapuche is the story of passionate fighters who managed to stop the Inca's but succumbed to the Spanish invaders after two and a half century of warfare. The relationship of the Mapuche language with other Amerindian languages has not yet been established. Mapuche is a highly agglutinative language with a complex verbal morphology. Previous Fa d’Ambô grammars are all written in Spanish, either in the spirit of Latin grammar models (Vila 1891, Barrena 1957) or in the tradition of Romance philology (Zamora Segorbe 2010). A Grammar of Fa d’Ambô aims to overcome the shortcomings of these grammars by providing a comprehensive description of the language from a creolistic, typological, and general linguistics perspective. The grammar covers all major domains of grammar and the different types of interactions between them. The book further includes transcribed texts (about 12,000 words), a Fa d’Ambô-English word list (about 1,140 entries) and supplementary audio materials corresponding to the transcribed texts and spectrograms. Being the first comprehensive Fa d’Ambô grammar written in English, the book aims at a wide readership of scholars who are interested in creoles, language typology, and language documentation in general, but also targets a specialized readership in Portuguese-related creoles. Definiteness has been a central topic in theoretical semantics since its modern foundation. However, despite its significance, there has been surprisingly scarce research on its cross-linguistic expression. With the purpose of contributing to filling this gap, the present volume gathers thirteen studies exploiting insights from formal semantics and syntax, typological and language specific studies, and, crucially, semantic fieldwork and cross-linguistic semantics, in order to address the expression and interpretation of definiteness in a diverse group of languages, most of them understudied. The papers presented in this volume aim to establish a dialogue between theory and data in order to answer the following questions: What formal strategies do natural languages employ to encode definiteness? What are the possible meanings associated to this notion across languages? Are there different types of definite reference? Which other functions (besides marking definite reference) are associated with definite descriptions? Each of the papers contained in this volume addresses at least one of these questions and, in doing so, they aim to enrich our understanding of definiteness.
