Excerpt from A Grammar of the Greek Language Pnnnars no elementary work has. So long and so justly been the subject of complaint, as the grammars employed for the purpose of introducing beginners into a knowledge of the Greek language. Those most esteemed for copiousness and methodical arrangement, fail either by the omission of much important matter, or by the incommodious disposition and defective exemplification of what they contain. Excerpt from Elementary Grammar of the Greek Language In the execution of my task I have derived great assis tance from K. W. Kriiger's Greek Grammar for beginners (published at Berlin in which is, on the whole one or the best elementary treatises on the Greek language, though its phraseology and arrangement are strangely at variance with what we might expect in an elementary work. Excerpt from Comparative Grammar of the Greek Language This Grammar makes no pretence whatever of being an original and exhaustive treatise on the subject. In a book of this kind there is practically no scope for a display of either of these features, but I have contrived to bring within a comparatively small space a great deal of matter which will be new to students, and especially to those who are unable to study the subject in works written in foreign languages. All that I have attempted to do is to furnish our countrymen with a systematic and scientific treatment of Comparative Greek Grammar based upon the philological books and articles of the best workers of the present day in the wide field of Comparative Philology. Specialists in the subject will accordingly find little that is new in the book. In Greek as in all the other indo-germanic languages there are still innumerable points which have never been satisfactorily explained, and not a few points about which there is a great divergence of opinion even among the best philologists. In all such cases I have carefully considered the various explanations which have been proposed, and have given those with which I agreed without, as a rule. Excerpt from A Compendious Grammar of the Greek Language It may be added that the Greek, from the much greater fulness of its forms and variety of its constructions, cannot be as adequately treated as the Latin, except in a larger volume. Mr. Marsh, in his able Lectures on the English Language, thus distinguishes: The grammar of the Greek language is much more exible, more tolerant of aberration, less rigid in its requirements, than the Latin. The precision, which the regularity of Latin syntax gives to a period, the Greek more completely and clearly accomplishes by the nicety with which individual words are defined in meaning; and While the Latin trains us to be good grammarians, the Greek elevates us to the highest dignity of manhood by making us acute and powerful thinkers. The greater need of explanation which results from this fulness and freedom, calls for additional space for, as Professor cur tius has well remarked, Memory can neither accurately grasp the great variety of Greek forms nor retain them, unless it be supported by an analyzing and combining intelligence, which furnishes, as it were, the hooks and cement to strengthen that which has been learned, and permanently impress it upon the mind. In respect to form, the present treatise should not be judged as an independent work, but as a condensed edition of a larger work, from the form of which it was deemed important to depart as little as pos sible. Thus, some references to authors, which are there fully made, are here given partially in preference to omitting them altogether. For fuller illustration and explanation on many points, will the reader pardon, once for all, a reference to the larger grammar? And will he permit the statement of principles and acknowledgments in its preface to be here understood without repetition, the rather for a reason which will appear in the next paragraph? Excerpt from Elements of the Greek Language: Taken From the Greek Grammar It has been presumed that, in general, the student would pass from the smaller to the larger Grammar, before entering on the study of Ionic or poetic writers. As this, however, may not always be convenient, it has seemed best to add, in an Appendix, a synopsis of the most important forms of dialect, and a brief account of the principal kinds of verse.
