TO THE FIRST RUSSIAN EDITION It was a very difficult task to write a guide-book of a small size designed to contain the fundamental knowledge of mathema tics which is most necessary to engineers and students of higher technical schools. In our tendency to the compactness and brevity of the exposition, we attempted, however, to produce a guide-book which would be easy to understand, convenient to use and as accurate as possible (as much as it is required in engineering). It should be pointed out that this book is neither a handbook nor a compendium, but a guide-book. Therefore it is not written as systematically as a handbook should be written. Hence the reader should not be surprised to find, for example, I'HOpital's rule in the section devoted to computation of limits which is a part of the chapter "Introduction to the analysis" placed before the concept of the derivative, or information about the Gamma function in the chapter "Algebra"-just after the concept of the factorial. There are many such "imperfections" in the book. Thus a reader who wants to acquire certain information is advised to use not only the table of contents but also the alpha betical index inserted at the end of the book. If a problem mentioned in the text is explained in detail in another place of the book, then the corresponding page is indicated in a footnote.

This book reminds students in junior, senior and graduate level courses in physics, chemistry and engineering of the math they may have forgotten (or learned imperfectly) that is needed to succeed in science courses. The focus is on math actually used in physics, chemistry, and engineering, and the approach to mathematics begins with 12 examples of increasing complexity, designed to hone the student's ability to think in mathematical terms and to apply quantitative methods to scientific problems. Detailed illustrations and links to reference material online help further comprehension. The second edition features new problems and illustrations and features expanded chapters on matrix algebra and differential equations. Use of proven pedagogical techniques developed during the author’s 40 years of teaching experience New practice problems and exercises to enhance comprehension Coverage of fairly advanced topics, including vector and matrix algebra, partial differential equations, special functions and complex variables

The Oxford Users' Guide to Mathematics is one of the leading handbooks on mathematics available. It presents a comprehensive modern picture of mathematics and emphasises the relations between the different branches of mathematics, and the applications of mathematics in engineering and the natural sciences. The Oxford User's Guide covers a broad spectrum of mathematics starting with the basic material and progressing on to more advanced topics that have come to the fore in the last few decades. The book is organised into mathematical sub-disciplines including analysis, algebra, geometry, foundations of mathematics, calculus of variations and optimisation, theory of probability and mathematical statistics, numerical mathematics and scientific computing, and history of mathematics. The book is supplemented by numerous tables on infinite series, special functions, integrals, integral transformations, mathematical statistics, and fundamental constants in physics. It also includes a comprehensive bibliography of key contemporary literature as well as an extensive glossary and index. The wealth of material, reaching across all levels and numerous sub-disciplines, makes The Oxford User's Guide to Mathematics an invaluable reference source for students of engineering, mathematics, computer science, and the natural sciences, as well as teachers, practitioners, and researchers in industry and academia.

How Math Works written by G. Arnell Williams and has been published by Rowman & Littlefield Publishers this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-04-04 with Education categories.

We hear all the time how American children are falling behind their global peers in various basic subjects, but particularly in math. Is it our fear of math that constrains us? Or our inability to understand math’s place in relation to our everyday lives? How can we help our children better understand the basics of arithmetic if we’re not really sure we understand them ourselves? Here, G. Arnell Williams helps parents and teachers explore the world of math that their elementary school children are learning. Taking readers on a tour of the history of arithmetic, and its growth into the subject we know it to be today, Williams explores the beauty and relevance of mathematics by focusing on the great conceptual depth and genius already inherent in the elementary mathematics familiar to us all, and by connecting it to other well-known areas such as language and the conceptual aspects of everyday life. The result is a book that will help you to better explain mathematics to your children. For those already well versed in these areas, the book offers a tour of the great conceptual and historical facts and assumptions that most simply take for granted. If you are someone who has always struggled with mathematics either because you couldn’t do it or because you never really understood why the rules are the way they are, if you were irritated with the way it was taught to you with the emphasis being only on learning the rules and “recipes” by rote as opposed to obtaining a good conceptual understanding, then How Math Works is for you!

Mathematical Publishing written by Steven George Krantz and has been published by American Mathematical Soc. this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005 with Mathematics categories.

Mathematicians are expected to publish their work: in journals, conference proceedings, and books. It is vital to advancing their careers. Later, some are asked to become editors. However, most mathematicians are trained to do mathematics, not to publish it. But here, finally, for graduate students and researchers interested in publishing their work, Steven G. Krantz, the respected author of several "how-to" guides in mathematics, shares his experience as an author, editor, editorial board member, and independent publisher. This new volume is an informative, comprehensive guidebook to publishing mathematics. Krantz describes both the general setting of mathematical publishing and the specifics about all the various publishing situations mathematicians may encounter. As with his other books, Krantz's style is engaging and frank. He gives advice on how to get your book published, how to get organized as an editor, what to do when things go wrong, and much more. He describes the people, the language (including a glossary), and the process of publishing both books and journals. Steven G. Krantz is an accomplished mathematician and an award-winning author. He has published more than 130 research articles and 45 books. He has worked as an editor of several book series, research journals, and for the Notices of the AMS. He is also the founder of the Journal of Geometric Analysis. Other titles available from the AMS by Steven G. Krantz are How to Teach Mathematics, A Primer of Mathematical Writing, A Mathematician's Survival Guide, and Techniques of Problem Solving.
