INSECTS Suggestions To Teachers The locust has been quite generally found a satisfactory form with which to begin the study of insects. Its structure is sufficiently generalized to make observation of the external structure easy, and the various species are widely distributed and usually abundant in the autumn at a time when many schools begin the study of zoology. For the living animal the local species may be used, and the work may be carried on in the field or in the laboratory. Specimens may be collected till quite late in the autumn, in grassy areas in the central and eastern United States, and they will live for some time if kept in a breeding-cage or other receptacle, with a piece of sod. For the external structure, either the Carolina locust (Dissoteira carolina), the American migratory locust (Acridium americanum), or the lubber locust (Eomalea microptera) may be used. These are all large species, which may be obtained, if not local to the region, from dealers in natural-history supplies. The authors do not require their pupils to dissect a locust. They have sometimes shown some of the systems of internal organs by dissecting specimens themselves before small groups of pupils, or they have used models or charts, supplemented by blackboard drawings. Very often pupils are found who are able to work out the gross anatomy, and their services may be enlisted for the benefit of other members of the class. The i development of the locust should be studied by means of specimens collected by the pupils or teacher, or obtained of dealers in natural-history supplies. Excerpt from Directions for Laboratory and Field Work in Zoology: For Use in Connection With Practical Zoology There are two chief reasons for separating the labora tory exercises from the textbook: (1) the pupils should not be tempted to depend upon their textbook to answer the questions that are asked in the laboratory, but should make original observations and then arrive at their own conclusions; and (2) teachers do not as a rule agree as to the order of the exercises or their contents, hence it is better to have the laboratory guide separated from the textbook in such a way as to enable the user to modify the order of procedure with the least possible confusion. The great amount of material available for laboratory study has of course necessitated a selection of subjects. The animals included have been chosen with the idea of combining interest with profit so that the pupil may be come acquainted with the common animals which he encounters more or less constantly in his daily life as well as with those that are of particular economic importance. Zoological principles, however, have not been slighted, but have been introduced in their appropriate positions. Many of the animals that are important economically are very difficult to obtain, and directions for the study of these have, of course, been omitted. Excerpt from A Laboratory Guide for Beginners in Zoology It is generally conceded that a satisfactory course in zoology requires both laboratory study of animal forms and lecture or text-book presentation of the laws of animal life. The teachers most conversant with pedagogical principles also contend that the greatest educational value of the subject lies in the opportunity it gives to furnish the student with an adequate first-hand knowledge of organic evolution. To accomplish this a course in which the pupil begins with the lower forms and works gradually upward is necessary. For the pupil thus follows the development of living things, seeing how each succeeding form is an improvement over the one that went before, and getting some idea of the great laws which govern the growth and sequence of animal life. In his study of these forms of life the pupil needs a guide which shall lead him wisely without telling him too much, and which shall stimulate him to see and to think without bewildering him with questions that he cannot answer. In this little book such an attempt is made. Since the directions were first used in my own classes some ten years ago modifications have been made every year, until in their present form I have found them thoroughly workable with average classes of beginners in zoology.
