The Akita is a large breed of working dog that originates from the mountainous regions of Japan. The breed was originally developed to hunt large prey, such as bears, wild boar and deer. The breed is split into two variant strains: the Japanese strain and the American strain. The Japanese strain is commonly known as 'Akita Inu' ('Inu' meaning 'dog' in Japanese) and the 'Great Japanese dog.' The Japanese strain has a narrow range of coat colorations which are red, fawn, sesame, brindle and pure white. The American strain of Akita comes in a much wider range of colorations - it can basically have any color that is normally found on dogs. The Akita will commonly have a short double coat, in a similar fashion to the Siberian Husky. However it is not uncommon for a Akita to have a long coat due to a recessive gene.
