The Akita is a large breed of working dog that originates from the mountainous regions of Japan. The breed was originally developed to hunt large prey, such as bears, wild boar and deer. The breed is split into two variant strains: the Japanese strain and the American strain. The Japanese strain is commonly known as 'Akita Inu' ('Inu' meaning 'dog' in Japanese) and the 'Great Japanese dog.' The Japanese strain has a narrow range of coat colorations which are red, fawn, sesame, brindle and pure white.
