Antipsychotic drugs have revolutionised the management of major psychiatric disorders and the outcomes of those who suffer from them. They are, however, possessed of a range of adverse effects, amongst the most frequent and distressing of which are those resulting in disturbance of voluntary motor function. Extrapyramidal side effects - or E.P.S. - are still poorly recognised and not infrequently misattributed. Despite a vast research literature, there have been few attempts to bring together both the descriptive clinical elements of these disorders and major research conclusions pertinent to routine practice. This very readable and well illustrated 1999 book seeks to rectify this in the hope of increasing clinicians' awareness of the issues and acknowledgement of their impact. This is a task made more rather than less urgent with the emergence of drugs of lower liability but which may promote subtler abnormality than standard compounds.

It is often implied that antipsychotic-induced extrapyramidal side-effects are irrelevant to modern psychiatric therapeutics, rendered historic by newer, better treatments. This myth arises from limited awareness of the depth and breadth of neurological disruption antipsychotics can mediate. This volume discusses the extensive clinical boundaries of acute dystonias, drug-induced parkinsonism, akathisia and tardive dyskinesia, providing demographic and epidemiological context while illustrating how prescribing choices impact powerfully on their development. This new edition has been thoroughly updated and rewritten to include recent data, expanded references and a new chapter on the concept of 'atypical' antipsychotics. Written in a light, engaging style, liberally illustrated with clinical examples, it also invites readers to consider ongoing controversies - subjective drug effects, the relationship between 'akathisia' and restless legs, the status of the concept of 'atypicality', and so on. Informative reading for trainees as well as established practitioners in the fields of psychiatry, neurology, primary care and geriatrics.

Medication Induced Movement Disorders written by Joseph H. Friedman and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-06-17 with Medical categories.

Medications that may produce movement disorders are widely used. The resulting disorders are often highly disconcerting for the patient and their relatives, especially when the connection between medication and disorder is not recognized. However, ascribing an adverse drug effect to medication exposure is often difficult, especially when the side effect is rare. Covering various drugs - including the major classes of medications working primarily on the brain, specifically antipsychotics and antidepressants – this all-encompassing review of medication-induced movement disorders aids early recognition and improved treatment. The problem of what to do when the offending medication cannot be reduced is also reviewed. It discusses the best options for evaluation and treatment, including medical imaging and deep brain stimulation, and guides the clinician in managing the disorder, making this a vital reference for medical specialists and consultants in neurology and neuropharmacology and any clinician seeing patients on medications crossing the blood-brain barrier.
