He describes some of the frescoes destroyed by his own hand with a minuteness of detail which proves them to have been well preserved. The whole sale destruction, not only of the paintings but of the architectural features of the ancient buildings (such as the tramezzi, which separated the monks from the lay worshippers), is due to Cosimo I., who seems to have had little sympathy with the Giottesque painters.
