Excerpt from A Guide to the Wild Flowers It is for this reason that a classification according to the soil in which they grow is feasible. It is a tangible point of which to take hold. And although there are some fickle-minded plants that appear to flourish in different kinds of soil, they may be regarded rather as those straying away from family tradition, than as trustworthy examples. As a rule they are partial to particular kinds of soil and do not thrive nearly so well in other than that allotted to them by Dame Nature. The marsh marigold, with which most of us are familiar when it reaches the sunny, warmer south retires to the wet, cool woods in search of a soil similar to that of its home marshes. The harebell, that is with us a shy plant, hiding itself in shady places and rooting in moist soil, in England ventures out into the meadows and highways. It has there not our midsummer heat with which to contend and finds the soil of the fields not unlike that of our Shaded banks. Excerpt from Harper's Guide to Wild Flowers This book explains the easiest way Of telling owers and plants. These ways are based upon the new Classification. This Classification is the one presented in the seventh edi tion Of Gray's Manual of Botany, published in 1908. It em bodies the decisions Of the Vienna Congress Of 1905. The Congress came to an agreement respecting the botanical names and Classifications Of American owers, which we hope will not need to be revised. Some Old names, dear to us, have Come back. Greater simplicity as well as perma nency has been aimed for. The first way Of telling owers is by color. It is the simplest means Of identification, and to this the most space is given. Secondly, owers may be identified by their dwelling places or habitats. Thirdly, owers are shown by seasons, the time and order Of their blossoms. This book is a Guide to the owering plants Of the Atlantic seaboard, New England, the Middle States, and, to a limited extent, Of the Southern States. It is interest ing to note the wide latitudinal range Of some plants along the entire Atlantic coast. As the climate grows warmer, plants ascend the mountains, and New Eng land vegetation reappears two thousand feet high in Vir ginia. Plants which are local, and but seldom found, the size Of this book excludes. Plant immigrants, unless well established, are not enumerated. Taking New York as the center of a wide circle, any per son possessing no knowledge Of botany (except such as may be acquired from the Explanation Of Technical Terms) may identify any ower and learn something Of its story. There is every reason to believe that there is need Of a book complete in its means of identification. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Practical Guide to the Wild Flowers and Fruits Increasing interest in the wild flowers has led to a very general desire to recognize them, even on the part of those who undertake no systematic study of botany. This interest is furthered by the numerous excellent popular works which in their turn encourage the study of the standard authorities. Excerpt from Wild Flowers East, of the Rockies Every book has a reason for its being, - or should have. There are excellent flower books, galore, but apparently there is a break in the series into which it is hoped the present volume will make a welcome fit. We are living in a progressive age, an inquisitive age, an age in which we want to know the names and meaning of all we see and hear. I have always held that a well-executed colored picture, as a means of identification, is worth pages of text. Of course the text is necessary to call attention to the salient points of the picture. In the case of flowers, birds, mammals, etc., the habits, ranges, sizes and other important points must be obtained from the text, but the picture, itself, forms the basis of quick and sure identification. I was practically brought up among birds and, consequently, flowers, because the two are inseparable companions in the fields. Wherever I wandered, I had one eye open for "new" flowers. Every such prize went home with me; if not carried in the hand, why, - in the top of the hat. No sooner home than out came the old "Gray's," the microscope and dissecting points. Sister and I eagerly weighed the evidence, placing the "find" in one family and then another, as discrepancies were found, until at last, we had it cornered down to the family, the genus and, finally, the exact species. Every new invention is designed to accomplish some end quicker or better than it has been done before. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. A Guide To The Wild Flowers East Of The Mississippi And North Of Virginia Classic Reprint written by Norman Taylor and has been published by Forgotten Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-10-29 with Science categories.

Excerpt from A Guide to the Wild Flowers East of the Mississippi and North of Virginia This book is for those to whom it is difficult, or tedious, or perhaps impossible, to find wild flowers in technical works, and irritating not to find them in How to Know books. It includes all the more conspicuous wild flowers that grow north of Virginia, and east of the Mississippi, except the grasses, sedges, and rare or technical species not likely to be interesting to the amateur. Professional botanists have several ways of sorting this mass of species into plant fami lies, but the present book ignores such technicalities, for the average nature-lover cares more about the identity of plants, than about the family of them. The arrangement of the book is, therefore, quite different from the current manuals. In them the sequence of plant families is obligatory. Here simpler and more direct methods of identification are used. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Western Flower Guide: Wild Flowers of the Rockies and West to the Pacific The preparation of a Pacific Coast Wild Flower Guide OI tne present small proportions has naturally involved a large exercise Of elimination. The flowers herein illustrated number 250, and the brief descriptions in non-technical language include besides these a few more whose resem blance to certain Of those depicted makes identification relatively easy. The selection Of the subjects has been based mainly upon the hold which such flowers have upon the popular heart on the Pacific Coast, and also to some extent by the part they have played in the human life Of the region. A few introduced plants - not uncommon in other parts Of the world, and some of them even homely - have been included in the descriptions, because their abundance, their uses, or their habits make them subjects Of interest to travelers and the general student. While the region covered in the Guide is principally the three Coast States, California, Oregon, and Washington, in many cases the plants described are also found eastward in the States from Idaho south to Arizona, and in some cases as far east as Colorado, New Mexico, and Texas. Plains and valleys, seaside and mountains, as well as the Southwestern desert region (a marvellously rich floral field for a part Of the year) are represented. While this book has been prepared out Of a personal acquaintance of many years with the field, the author desires to acknowledge his indebtedness to the following works upon which he has had occasion to draw for special descriptions and points - Gray' s Synoptical Flora of North America, Jepson' s Flora Of California (in course of publication), Hall's Compositae of Southern California and Yosemite Flora, Parson's Wild Flowers Of California, Armstrong's Western Wild Flowers, Meehan's Native Flowers and Ferns Of the United States, and the valuable-monographs of Chestnut, Coville, Havard, and Barrows on the Indian uses of native plants.
