Excerpt from A Handbook of Greek and Roman Sculpture Part Ten - Portraits - is the least complete part of the collection, especially as regards Roman portraits. This had to be so, because the number of extant Roman por traits is so large that even a fair selection from them would have been out of proportion to the other parts of the book. No attempt, therefore, has been made to give portraits of all men of note. The aim rather has been to select statues and busts which illustrate the develop ment of portrait-sculpture, irrespective of the persons portrayed. In Part Eleven - Heads the specialist may miss some favorite specimens, but here again the material from which to draw is so large that a rigid sifting process became necessary. The principle followed was similar to that adopted for Part Ten. Heads were included in the list when they illustrated the development of sculpture, and often excluded, although with considerable regret, when their chief claim to attention was based on their pleasing appearance. Excerpt from Hand-Book of Greek and Roman Sculpture As the Berlin Museum contains casts of all well-known ancient statues the Bausteine starts at the beginnings of Greek sculpture, gradually unfolds the principles that led to its perfect development, and follows it through degen cracy to its end. I have undertaken to translate and edit selections from the Bausteine to meet the taste that is happily beginning to show itself in this country. My book may serve asa catalogue where casts are already collected; it may also serve as a guide to societies interested in forming collections, for in selecting I have sought for the most typical examples. A few descriptions are taken from other sources. Of these the majority relate to works discovered, or investi gated, since the Bausteine was published. It is evident that the descriptions should be read in the presence of the objects, or of good representations of them; casts or photographs, for instance. The ordinary cuts with which books on art are ordinarily illustrated may serve for purposes of recognition, but they are so misleading and hurtful that I do not recommend their use. It is further evident that if the art-student would derive all possible benefit from this work he will study the statues in their chronological order. I' I take great pleasure in thus publicly thanking Mr. Alfred L. Ripley, of the Yale faculty, for his kind, valuable, and indispensable assistance in preparing this edition for the press. It is a happy thing that Greek sculpture is beginning to receive deserved attention in this country; for there is no better assured process for purifying taste than that offered by its study. Excerpt from A Handbook of Greek and Roman Sculpture This collection offers, on five hundred plates and forty-five text illustrations, the most important remains of Greek and Roman sculpture. Supplementary collections may be issued in the future as they become necessary and are asked for by those who use this series. The plates have been made from original photographs especially imported by the Bureau of University Travel. In a few cases, where original photographs were inaccessible or where better results could be obtained from large plates or photographs in the possession of Harvard University, this has been done, and thanks are due to the proper authorities for the permission to use them. A small number of plates are copied from books. The plates are not "retouched." Where the backgrounds seem to have been painted black this is the defect of the original photograph. In the classification the editor has aimed at clearness, believing to serve the student best by enabling him to find instantly the desired pictures. He has, therefore, often deviated from the general rule of giving in the several groups, first the statues of men, then those of women, and finally the reliefs and other temple sculptures. In the fifth-century group, for instance, the individual artists have been treated separately. In the sub-divisions, whenever possible, the alphabetical order has been followed. Excerpt from Descriptive Catalogue of the Casts From Greek and Roman Sculpture Since the publication of the former catalogue, the col lection of casts has increased to such an extent that the Trustees of the Museum have found the continued issue of supplements impracticable, and have therefore ordered the preparation of a new catalogue. Advantage has been taken of this Opportunity to offer what it is hoped may be both a guide for general visitors, and a useful handbook for students, for whom especially the notes following the title of each object are intended. The statements regard ing restorations are based upon those of archaeologists who have made especial studies of the respective objects, com pared with photographs and with the author's notes. No attempt has been made to give the complete literature of each object, as this would have increased the size of the catalogue unnecessarily. The references are generally either to the best illustrations of the work described, or to one or two of the most important essays upon it, and are given partly as an assistance in identifying the casts with their originals, and partly for the benefit of those who may wish an exhaustive description of some particular work. In general histories and manuals of ancient sculpture stu dents can easily find the allusions to the objects of which casts are here exhibited. A list of the more important of these histories is given below. With few exceptions, the Greek names of deities and heroes are given, in preference to their Roman synonymes.
