Excerpt from Handbook of English Composition: A Compilation of Standard Rules and Usage As the title of the book signifies, these rules have been, in the main, compiled from standard authorities which are indicated in the Bibliography at the close of the book. N 0 statement has place here that is not sup ported by some recognized authority; when authorities differ an attempt has been made to choose that one best exemplified in the usage of the best modern literature. The author has tried to provide in notes and ex ceptions for differences between matters of accepted usage, such as a period at the end of a sentence, and matters of divided usage and preference, such as many details of cap italization and punctuation. Excerpt from System of Punctuation The following pages contain substantially the notes of a lecture delivered to several classes in the University. They are printed, both in order to save time in giving my own instruction, and in the hope that this method of presenting the subject may recommend itself to others. I have tried different plans of initiating students of composition into the mystery of Punctuation. The least successful has been that which rested on usage: the most successful, the one presented here. Even a compromise, which stated the general principles now contended for, and then sent the student to our literature for models, was less productive of results than this effort to deduce a few rules from the fundamental truths of the subject. Excerpt from Practical English Punctuation Further, in an effort to make the book practical, us able, the author has employed the term punctuation in its broadest sense. Not only has hvphenation been treated, but compound words as well; not only the capitalization of proper names in general, but the specific kinds of proper names that are to be caprtalized; not only the punctuation of abbreviations, but the prevailing usage governing the writing of abbreviations -so that the book as a whole, with its rules governing the use of quotations, foot - notes, letters and letter writing, and the general sub j ect of the preparation of manuscripts, may be found to be a compact, convenient, and reasonably full compend ium of rules for the guidance of all persons who have need to write. One Other matter connected with the preparation of the book deserves especial mention. The rules herein set down have not been made from the writings of Thack eray, Scott, Dickens, and authors of their time or earlier. If one is frank, one must admit that the punctuation as well as the style of such writers is a bit antiquated now, that it is not entirely modern. Consequently, the models used in this guide-book have been, as far as possible, con servative modern authors, such as William Dean Howells, Henry jam'esyrobert Herrick, recognized contributors to present - day standard magazines, and other writers like these. Excerpt from Why We Punctuate: Or Reason Versus Rule, in the Use of Marks The excellent handbook of Mr. Marshall T. Bigelow, published in 1881, is merely a summary of the principal rules of Mr. Wilson's work. Its brief ness greatly limits its value. The work, entitled Punctuation, of Mr. F. Horace Teall, published in 1897, is also an admirable handbook, but it gives more space to spelling than to punctuation. It gives only four pages, very small ones, to the consideration of the colon; and two of the colon's principal uses, discussed at length herein, are not mentioned.
