To this end accounts of the anatomy and physiology of the eye and of its physical optics have been omitted, as these subjects are best studied in the text books on Anatomy, Physiology, and Physics. Full directions for the various Operations on the eye have also been omitted, for only a very small proportion of medical men undertake these, and for such there is an ample choice of large text books on Ophthalmology. Lastly, directions for the use of the ophthalmoscope have been omitted, as after several years' experience with students I am most strongly of opinion that its use can only be learnt from clinical teaching, and that all printed instructions are little better than wasted labour. Excerpt from Hand-Book of Diseases of the Eye: A d104-Book for Students and Practitioners The object in presenting this small volume on the eye is to place before the student and the busy practitioner in a concise manner the results of recent investigations and their practical application. All unnecessary details have been omitted, and yet the common eye diseases and their treatment have been sufficiently elaborated. The special chapter on bacteriology has been incorporated because of the great aid in the diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment we obtain from the bacteriological examination of the acute inflammatory diseases of the eye. The chapter on refraction gives the details of modern methods necessary for preliminary work in this subject, and will serve as a groundwork for the finer tests which only experience can bring. The chapter on the sclera gives the latest investigations on the tuberculous origin of most forms of inflammation which attack this structure, also some points on tuberculin therapy. As an appendix to this chapter the Calmette ophthalmo-tuberculin reaction and the von Pirquet cutaneous test are considered as methods of diagnosing tubercular diseases of the eye. The chapter on the relation of the eye and the nose is a new departure in a purely ophthalmic text-book. It has become necessary because of the numerous eye affections now known to be dependent upon pathological conditions in the nose. A formulary has been appended which contains forty-one practical prescriptions, which will be of value to the practitioner. The great success that attended former editions decided me to make an attempt to place it once more on a sound basis. Much care and labour has been taken to make the work as practical as possible. It was chiefly owing to the attention paid to the clinical features, and to the treatment of the various eye diseases, that the book obtained its former popularity; and to these portions, and especially to treatment, a much larger space has been allotted than is usually the case. At the same time, much more attention has been paid to the anatomical, pathological, and theoretical aspects, and, as a consequence, and owing partly to the great strides made of late years in ophthalmic surgery, the book has greatly increased in size. My endeavour has been, briefly, to present a work which will serve not only for the student of Ophthalmology, but will also prove useful as a book of reference for the general practitioner, who is more concerned with the practical relief of disease than with the theory of it. I can only hope that, in some measure at least, this attempt has been successful, and if so, the labour which has occupied the greater part of the leisure time of three years will be amply rewarded. The endeavor has been to make the work practical and at the same time as thorough as the importance of the subject demands. The causes, symptoms, differential diagnosis, and treatment of those diseases which are more commonly met with in general practice have been fully considered. The methods of treatment described are those which have borne the test of hospital and private practice, and in the experience of the writer have been found of value. Numerous illustrations have been introduced to better elucidate the conditions and operations described, and such as are not original have been selected from the standard works on ophthalmology, as well illustrating the points presented. Colored lithographs from the admirable atlas of Sichel and others have been added in the endeavor to more fully depict the diseases described and thus enable the student or practitioner to readily diagnose the various affections when presented. The brevity of the book has prevented reference in the body of the work to the authorities consulted in its preparation, and a list has been appended.
