Excerpt from A Handbook to Dante The chief defect of the Italian work is a tendency, on the part of the author, to present Dante otherwise than he was, and otherwise than he wished to be presented to the world, to make a kind of Puritanical Milton out of him, whereas, in fact, he was rather a Catholic, Mediaeval Goethe, a man with many faults and weak nesses, but, withal, a noble, an honest, and a thoroughly earnest man. I have tried, by means of foot-notes, to remedy the defect, at the risk, I am well aware, of being reckoned among the slanderers of Dante. I can hope for sympathy only from the unbiassed lovers of the naked truth. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Handbook to the Works of Dante Dante literature is so vast that no individual scholar can pretend to have read and digested it all, but I have sought to profit by the labours of distinguished contemporaries. Excerpt from Aids to the Study of Dante The Divina Commedia is singular among the great works with which it ranks, for its strong stamp of permnal character and history. In general we asso ciate little more than the name not the life of a great poet with his works; personal interest belongs more usually to greatness in its active than its crea tive forms. But the whole idea and purpose of the Commedia, as well as its filling up and coloring, are determined by Dante's peculiar history. The loftiest, perhaps, in its aim and flight of all poems, it is also the most individual; the writer's own life is chronicled init, aswell as the issues and upshotof all things. It is at once themirror to all time of thesinsand perfections of men, of the judgments and grace of God, and the record, often the only one, of the tran sient names, and local factions, and obscure ambitions. Excerpt from An Introduction to the Study of Dante More than nineteen years have elapsed since the composition, and more than seventeen since the publication of this book. It was written at Heiligenblut, beneath the glaciers of the Gross Glockner, during the summer of 1870 - that year which saw the fall of the French and the foundation of the German Empire. I wrote it originally for lectures, and when I sent it to press in 1872, I did not alter its form in any essential particular. As I said in the preface to the first edition, My sole purpose was to make the study of Dante's works more easy to English readers. Excerpt from Dante Studies and Researches The selected articles here printed have been carefully re vised, and, in several cases, considerably enlarged. One or two, on the other hand, have been condensed by the omission of matter which it was more convenient to introduce in another shape elsewhere. In order to render the contents of the volume as easily ac cessible as possible, two full indices have been provided, viz, a subject-index, and an index of the passages in Dante's works which are quoted or referred to in the course of the various articles. It remains for me to express my acknowledgments to the editors and publishers Of the several journals and reviews, French, Italian, American, and English, in which these articles and notes originally appeared, for permission to reprint them in the present volume. Excerpt from The Life of Dante IN the fourteen years which have elapsed since the appearance of Dean Plumptre's Life of Dante a good deal of labour has been bestowed upon the investigation of points connected with the history of the poet and his times; and it may be doubted whether the accomplished author himself would still be prepared to main tain all the positions which his enthusiasm for his subject then led him to take up. At all events it was thought that, another edition being walled for, something might be done in the way of pruning down a little of the some what exuberant conjecture in which the Dean, after the fashion of an earlier school of bio graphers, was apt to indulge. This has been done very sparingly; and a good deal has been left which the present editor is by no means prepared to endorse; but it is hoped that in. Excerpt from Introduction to Dante's Inferno The mcious holding of certain opinions is often the cause of divorce between logic and action, erasing from the mind all that was patiently learned in the hard school of experience. And so it comes to pass that some do still persist in making the great Tuscan say what he neither meant, nor thought of saying. They waste a prodigious amount of erudition and energy to confinetothenarrowlimits ofanepoch, orseriesof epochs, that which was intended to apply to all times. The Earliest Lives Of Dante Classic Reprint written by Giovanni Boccaccio and has been published by Forgotten Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-10-12 with Literary Collections categories.

Excerpt from The Earliest Lives of Dante These lives of Dante were written, one within fifty, the other within a hundred and twenty-five years, after the poet's death. Boccaccio was acquainted with at least four persons who, as we have reason to believe, knew Dante in the flesh, and he could draw his information from them as well as from popular tradition. Bruni, on the other hand, who, as he himself says, supplements the work of his predecessor, derives the bulk of his matter from public documents and let ters of Dante, which are not now extant. The value, then, Of their works lies in their nearness to authoritative sources. No other documents Of anything like equal importance as regards the life of Dante have come down to us. Our knowledge of the poet as he moved among men is almost wholly derived from these two lives and from his own works. The facts here presented are not all Of equal significance or trustworthiness. The dream of the poet's mother, the presumed unhappiness Of his marriage, the charge made against him of great licentiousness in youth and manhood, the dates here given of his works, the loss and recovery Of the last thirteen cantos of the C ommedia, have no evidence in their favor other than that which is here presented. But the main features Of his life: the time and place of his birth, his liberal education, his life-long love of Beatrice on earth and in the spirit, his marriage to Gemma Donati, his rise to the highest places in the government of Florence, his banishment and twenty years of exile, and the date and manner of his death, these things, I repeat, we know to be true.
