Excerpt from Handbook to the Works of Dante Dante literature is so vast that no individual scholar can pretend to have read and digested it all, but I have sought to profit by the labours of distinguished contemporaries. At the same time I have made a special and independent study'of Dante's writings, with which I have been familiar from early youth. Excerpt from A Handbook to Dante Last summer, while preparing some lectures on Dante, I was struck with the fact that there did not exist in English any Handbook to Dante, any book calculated to furnish intending students of his works with the necessary preparatory information, historical, bibliographical, biographical, and literary. My first impulse was to attempt the compilation of such a book, which seemed called for by the daily-increasing interest in the great Christian poet; but, on reflection, it seemed to me that I might obtain a better result, by translating some Italian or German manual, and making such additions as would suit it to the needs of English-speaking students. This I have now done, having selected for translation the Dante-Manual which finds most favor in Italy, which is the work of one of the best Dante-scholars of our time, and which seems to me almost a model for a Handbook. My own additions, which, for the most part, take the form of foot-notes, included in brackets, will, it is hoped, add to the value of the work, and supplement certain one-sided views held by Dr. Scartazzini. Excerpt from An Introduction to the Study of Dante More than nineteen years have elapsed since the composition, and more than seventeen since the publication of this book. It was written at Heiligenblut, beneath the glaciers of the Gross Glockner, during the summer of 1870 - that year which saw the fall of the French and the foundation of the German Empire. I wrote it originally for lectures, and when I sent it to press in 1872, I did not alter its form in any essential particular. As I said in the preface to the first edition, My sole purpose was to make the study of Dante's works more easy to English readers. Excerpt from Introduction to Dante's Inferno The mcious holding of certain opinions is often the cause of divorce between logic and action, erasing from the mind all that was patiently learned in the hard school of experience. And so it comes to pass that some do still persist in making the great Tuscan say what he neither meant, nor thought of saying. They waste a prodigious amount of erudition and energy to confinetothenarrowlimits ofanepoch, orseriesof epochs, that which was intended to apply to all times. Excerpt from The Life of Dante IN the fourteen years which have elapsed since the appearance of Dean Plumptre's Life of Dante a good deal of labour has been bestowed upon the investigation of points connected with the history of the poet and his times; and it may be doubted whether the accomplished author himself would still be prepared to main tain all the positions which his enthusiasm for his subject then led him to take up. At all events it was thought that, another edition being walled for, something might be done in the way of pruning down a little of the some what exuberant conjecture in which the Dean, after the fashion of an earlier school of bio graphers, was apt to indulge. This has been done very sparingly; and a good deal has been left which the present editor is by no means prepared to endorse; but it is hoped that in. Excerpt from Dante, His Times and His Work In connection with some of the remarks in the opening chapter, Professor Butcher's Essay on The Dawn of Romanticism in Greek Poetry should be noticed. I do not think that the aecom plished author's view is incompatible with mine; though I admit that I had not taken much account of the Greek writers whom we call post-classical. But it is to be noted, as bearing on the question raised in the second footnote on p. 9, that most or all of the writers whom he cites were either Asiatics or nearly touched by Asiatic influences. Excerpt from The Teachings of Dante One hot summer's morning several years ago, wishing to make more enjoyable a day of leisure, I searched through a friend's library for an interesting book to take into the woods. Most of the volumes, being upon theology and philosophy, appeared too dry and heavy. Finally, I selected Longfellow's translation of Dante's "Inferno," for the three-fold reason that I had little knowledge of the illustrious Italian, the book itself was attractive, and the title seemed to accord with the heat of the day. No sooner, however, had I begun to read than indolence changed to an absorbed attention. The uniqueness of the theme, the vividness of Dante's pictures, the beauty of Longfellow's translation fascinated me. The book became a constant companion during the summer, and when the work of the year began the spell of Dante's great personality was upon me. Excerpt from Aids to the Study of Dante The Divina Commedia is singular among the great works with which it ranks, for its strong stamp of permnal character and history. In general we asso ciate little more than the name not the life of a great poet with his works; personal interest belongs more usually to greatness in its active than its crea tive forms. But the whole idea and purpose of the Commedia, as well as its filling up and coloring, are determined by Dante's peculiar history. The loftiest, perhaps, in its aim and flight of all poems, it is also the most individual; the writer's own life is chronicled init, aswell as the issues and upshotof all things. It is at once themirror to all time of thesinsand perfections of men, of the judgments and grace of God, and the record, often the only one, of the tran sient names, and local factions, and obscure ambitions.
