Printers in the early modern Low Countries produced no fewer than 152 editions of Ovid’s Metamorphoses. John Tholen investigates what these editions can tell us about the early modern application of the popular ancient text. Analysis of paratexts shows, for example, how editors and commentators guide readers to Ovid’s potentially subversive contents. Paratextual infrastructures intended to create commercial credibility, but simultaneously were a response to criticism of reading the Metamorphoses. This book combines two often separated fields of research: book history and reception studies. It provides a compelling case study of how investigation into the material contexts of ancient texts sheds new light on early modern receptions of antiquity.

This book investigates the complex reception of Terence in Ovid and a number of allusions to the Terentian comedies in the love elegies and the exilic elegiac epistle Tristia 2. The genres of Latin love elegy and New Comedy are often seen as closely connected in research, and one leading view is that Latin love elegy to a large degree springs out of the comic genre. However, though both genres are strongly rooted in social practise and presents interpersonal relationships in a non-mythological, everyday setting, there are also major differences between them. Marriage, for instance, is the conventional goal for the young lover withing the comic genre, whereas the elegiac lover should avoid it. Taking into account both the similarities and the crucial differences between the comic genre and Latin love elegy, and key elegiac topoi such as seruitium amoris and militia amoris, this book demonstrates an intricate connection between Ovid and Terence, and a complex nexus of allusions that goes straight to the core of Ovid’s elegiac authorship. The Ovidian Renaissance seems to have left the Remedia Amoris behind. The poem has remained marginal, read either as a reversal of the Ars Amatoria's teaching that brings the world of Ovidian elegy to a banal end, or as an over-determined supplement to the Ars which ironically fails in its ostensible aim of 'curing' the dissatisfied lover. While recent work has explored how the poem functions not just as a palinode to, but also as a continuation of, the Ars, the critical status quo continues to present it as a minor appendage rather than as an important chapter in Ovid's project as a poet of desire. Victoria Rimell's commentary resets critical perspectives by reading the Remedia as distinctive and original, and as a pivotal text within Ovid's oeuvre as a whole. In her immersive, creatively interpretative guide to the poem, the Remedia emerges as an intricate work that interacts with medical texts, works on rhetoric, law, magic and ritual, philosophical thinking about self-discipline, the irrational, consolation and therapy for the soul, as well as with Greco-Roman satire, lyric, epigram, and traditions of didactic and erotodidactic verse. The poem, Rimell argues, is a key node in Ovid's development of a poetics of paradox, reversibility, and auto-immunity.

This book is devoted to medieval Iberian women, readers and writers. Focusing on the stories and texts women heard, visually experienced or read, and the stories that they rewrote, the work explores women’s experiences and cultural practices and their efforts to make sense of their place within their familial networks and communities.
