A Healthy Society offers a new approach to politics – and a new approach to building a healthier world. Dr. Meili argues that health delivery too often focuses on treatment of immediate causes and ignores fundamental conditions that lead to poor health, such as income, education, employment, housing, and environment. This updated edition explores the positive steps that have been taken since publication of the first edition, and includes expanded discussions of basic income, poverty reduction strategies, innovative housing polices, carbon pricing, and the role of health professionals in working for health equity. This book breaks important ground, showing us how a focus on health can change Canadian politics for the better.

A Healthy Society, Updated and Expanded Edition, is one doctor's vision for a new approach to politics--and a new approach to building a healthier world. Brought to life through a mix of expertise and story, this book appeals beyond political lines to address our common values, arguing that health is a measure of our success as a society. Drawing on his experiences as a family physician in the inner city of Saskatoon, in rural Saskatchewan, and in Mozambique, Dr. Meili argues that health delivery too often focuses on treatment of immediate causes and ignores more fundamental conditions that lead to poor health. Far more than the actions of healthcare providers, it is the social determinants of health--income, education, employment, housing, the wider environment, and social supports--that make the greatest difference. This updated edition describes the positive steps that have been taken since the first edition was published in 2012. It includes: new chapters on poverty, food security, and climate change; new content in every chapter, with expanded discussions on basic income, poverty reduction strategies, innovative housing polices, carbon pricing, and the role of health professionals in working for health equity; new accounts by patients about their experiences in the health care system. This edition breaks important ground, showing us how a focus on health can change Canadian politics for the better."-- Provided by publisher.

“Did you ever go to bed and wonder if your child was getting enough to eat?” For food insecure mothers, the worry is constant, and babies are at risk of going hungry. Through compelling interviews, Lesley Frank answers the breastfeeding paradox: why women who can least afford to buy infant formula are less likely to breastfeed. She exposes the shocking reality of food insecurity for formula-fed babies and the constraints limiting mothers’ ability to breastfeed. Out of Milk calls out the pressing need to establish the economic and social conditions necessary for successful breastfeeding and for accessible and safe formula feeding for families everywhere.

Health and quality of life are vital social reflections. The way a society distributes resources amongst its population tells us a great deal about the society itself. This unique volume unites readings that explore the integral link between quality of life and public policy choices. The first section discusses individual perspectives on health promotion and quality of life and provides a conceptual basis for determining an individual's or community's standard. The next section addresses community and policy perspectives to show how quality of life is related both to the health of the population as a whole, and to collective choices that determine how material resources are distributed in society. Part three places quality of life and population health within a political economy framework and uses the social determinants of health concept to illustrate how societies differ in their willingness to support their members' quality of life and health. Part four examines vulnerable populations and their issues: the Indigenous community, persons with disabilities, women and the gender gap, and the effects of race and immigrant status on employment opportunities. The final section suggests ways in which health promotion, quality of life, and the social determinants of health agendas can come together. It provides an up-to-date analysis of the barriers facing those attempting to improve quality of life and health, as well as the means to accomplish those goals.
