"Is this your first visit to Zambia?" shouts the driver above the din of protesting gears as he rams his way mercilessly up through them and into top gear causing the entire truck to vibrate. "No, we have been here many times," I yell back. "Many times?" he repeats incredulously. "Then what are you doing travelling on this road in that vehicle?" He shakes his head in disbelief. ***** "So you have been in Zambia already?" asks the deputy head. "Many times," we assure him. "Then you know our ways?" he asks. "For sure this couple knows us and our ways!" laugh the three young men. "Especially the ways of the Mr Bandas of Zambia!" ***** Join Moira and Robert Cooke as they battle once more to rescue starfish stranded by the HIV Aids epidemic on the beaches of modern day Zambia. Meet Mr Banda, as slippery a head teacher as you're ever likely to encounter. Struggle along with the Cookes to gain entry to Lusaka Prison. And read how they cope when an orphan asks Moira if she will be her mother! "These people sent from God . . . who have a real heart for us and our children," Quistin Chalwe of the Faith Orphanage Foundation. If you enjoyed Moira's first book, 'Bwanakula Thandi', then you'll laugh and cry in turn at this further account of their work with orphans and vulnerable children in Zambia's poorest community schools.

I Share My Heart With Africa written by Denise Carnihan and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015 with Community development categories.

"Little did Kiwi woman Denise Carnihan know that what started as her son's school project on 'family origins' would result in visiting her newly discovered family in South Africa in 2009, and lead her and her family on a completely different life journey, culminating in building a fully functioning school in a poor region of Kenya in 2011. Inspired by her initial adventure, Denise decided to do a volunteer stint at an orphanage in Kenya and after witnessing the poverty and squalor first hand, she understood the enormous importance placed on education in this developing country. "Wouldn't it be cool if we could build a little school in a big slum for say 50 kids was the random comment she made to her husband, Chris when they both returned to Kenya the following year. Incredibly, this became the reality for Denise and Chris Carnihan from a small coastal town in New Zealand. They then literally "stumbled" head first into building and establishing their very own primary school - in a large slum, opening with not 50 children as planned ... but 117. Within 18 months the roll had grown to 380+ children and 12 staff. Denise, talks passionately about her love for Africa and her beautiful African journey. And she describes candidly the joys; the immense satisfaction and the overwhelming drive needed to persevere, together with the enormous challenges, battles, and frustrations in establishing a project in a slum of Kenya, where communication and culture operate in extremes"--http://www.isharemyheartwithafrica.com.

A widely requested follow up to Janine Maxwell's first two books It's Not Okay With Me and Is It Okay With You?, HOPE LIVES HERE is a comprehensive look behind the scenes of Project Canaan: A Place of HOPE, a development project and children's home that she and her husband Ian are building in Africa. While this book is not specifically a "how to" manual on how to start a ministry in Africa, nor a guide on successfully developing a self-sustainable farm with water provision during devastating drought, it is the heartfelt and often heart-wrenching story of their journey and path toward growing promising futures for hundreds of orphaned or abandoned children. Maxwell breaks down details of their Hunger, Orphans, Poverty, Education initiatives designed to bring HOPE to the kingdom of Eswatini and much more. Joys and successes are equally shared alongside lows and betrayals.

A Heart For The Work written by Claire L. Wendland and has been published by University of Chicago Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-10 with Medical categories.

Burnout is common among doctors in the West, so one might assume that a medical career in Malawi, one of the poorest countries in the world, would place far greater strain on the idealism that drives many doctors. But, as A Heart for the Work makes clear, Malawian medical students learn to confront poverty creatively, experiencing fatigue and frustration but also joy and commitment on their way to becoming physicians. The first ethnography of medical training in the global South, Claire L. Wendland’s book is a moving and perceptive look at medicine in a world where the transnational movement of people and ideas creates both devastation and possibility. Wendland, a physician anthropologist, conducted extensive interviews and worked in wards, clinics, and operating theaters alongside the student doctors whose stories she relates. From the relative calm of Malawi’s College of Medicine to the turbulence of training at hospitals with gravely ill patients and dramatically inadequate supplies, staff, and technology, Wendland’s work reveals the way these young doctors engage the contradictions of their circumstances, shedding new light on debates about the effects of medical training, the impact of traditional healing, and the purposes of medicine.

While many high-income countries observe a relative decline in the population impact of heart disease and deal with the problem of an older patient population who readily survive earlier non-fatal encounters with the condition, Africa contends with a typically younger population with frequently advanced and often fatal heart disease. While high-income countries exclusively deal with non-communicable forms of heart disease, Africa contends with both communicable and non-communicable forms of heart disease. Designed to provide anyone with an interest in heart disease in Africa with an immediate sense of how the area is progressing from a clinical to research perspective in responding to this evolving epidemic Presents salient research uncovering the evolving burden of communicable and non-communicable forms of heart disease, Includes content on maternal heart disease, infant and childhood heart disease, risk and prevention, heart failure and other common forms of heart disease in rural and urban communities in Africa.

This book is a true account of the events on a long ago night when two angels from heaven "visited" me. It is the story of that "angelic encounter" as I experienced it. It happened many years ago, but the impressions are still vivid in my memory. It was not a fleeting glimpse of ethereal beings clothed in cloudy mist. Those angels were "real." If seen from a distance they probably would have seemed like ordinary men. Close up, however, no one could have mistaken them for men. Anyone would have known they were angels who had come down from heaven. During their first appearance, it seemed to me their speech to me lasted a long time. In retrospect that time period probably could have been measured in minutes. That is true even though they seemed like very "long" minutes. They were silent during their brief second appearance; albeit puzzled and inquisitive. These angels had about them a mysterious air of another world. They stood in front of my chair, in my living room with an indescribable and lofty majesty. Their posture and demeanor "spoke" of another sphere of existence. A sphere about which writers have speculated for thousands of years. They somehow "reeked" of an indescribable physical and mental power that was beyond my comprehension. My initial reaction was fright. A fright so great it overwhelmed my senses. I thought they had come to kill me. That was a certainty in my numbed mind. That fear quickly became life threatening. I did not know it at the time but their actions and speech would be forever impressed on my memory. During their first visit, they were extremely anxious to reassure me. They did not wish me to fear them. Their speech was sympathetic and reassuring. They told me they had not come to injure me in any way. They then explained the reason for their "intrusion" into my presence. Nothing that I have found anywhere in literature, except perhaps the bible, tells a similar story. My personality underwent a complete change that night. The brief account of that experience is now told for the first time in the 40 years since that encounter.
