There is a growing body of historical literature on the importance of John Owen. Ryan M. McGraw seeks to reassess Owen's theology in light of the way in which he connected his trinitarian piety to his views of public worship. McGraw argues that Owen ́s teaching on communion with God as triune was the foundation of his views of public worship and that he regarded public worship as the highest expression of communion with the triune God. These themes not only highlight Owen's context as a Reformed orthodox theologian, but the distinctive influence of English Puritanism on his theological emphases. The connection between his practical trinitarianism and public worship runs through the course of his writings and every major area of his theology. These include the nature of theology, the knowledge of God, the doctrine of the Trinity, public worship, spiritual affections, apostasy, covenant theology, ecclesiology, and Christology. This work treats these themes in Owen's thought and shows how they intersect and are intertwined with the Trinity and public worship. In addition, this book provides a detailed exposition of the parts of Reformed worship. While other works have treated the centrality of his trinitarianism in his theology, few have acknowledged the importance of public worship in his thinking. This research concludes that communion with God in public worship was integral to Owen's practical trinitarian theology.

John Owen written by Ryan M. McGraw and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-08-18 with Religion categories.

This book is a thorough study of John Owen. Owen has become recognized as one of the greatest Reformed theologians Great Britain ever produced, as well as one of the most significant theologians of the Reformed orthodox period. His theological interests were eclectic, exegetically based, and he sought to meet the needs of his times. This volume treats key areas in Owen’s thought, including the Trinity, Old Testament exegesis, covenant theology, the law and the gospel, the nature of faith in relation to images of Christ, and prolegomena. The common theme tying them together is that John Owen helps us better understand the development and interrelationship of theology, exegesis, and piety in Reformed orthodox theology. By setting him in his international and cross-confessional contexts, the author seeks to use Owen as a window into the trajectory of Reformed orthodoxy in several key areas.

The Collected Works of Witness Lee, 1978, volume 1, contains messages given by Brother Witness Lee from January 22 through December 11, 1978. In 1978 Brother Lee spoke seventy-five messages that were published in Life-study of Genesis and Life-study of Ephesians. The Life-study messages are not included in The Collected Works of Witness Lee. From the beginning of the year until the end of April, Brother Lee ministered in Anaheim, California. From the beginning of May through the middle of May, he visited Boston, Massachusetts, after which he returned to Anaheim. Except for brief visits to the nearby cities of Costa Mesa, Irvine, and San Diego, California, he remained in Anaheim from the middle of May through the first week in August. The remaining messages included in this volume that were given after the first week in August were all spoken in Anaheim. The contents of this volume are divided into nine sections, as follows: 1. Six messages given in Anaheim, California, on January 22 through December 10. These messages are included in this volume under the title Experiencing Christ as Life and Being Constituted with the Truth for God's Building. 2. Nine messages given in Anaheim, California, on January 26 through October 19. These messages were consolidated into five chapters and are included in this volume under the title Fellowship with the Church in Anaheim. 3. Seven messages given in Anaheim, California, on March 23 through April 9. They were previously published in an eight-chapter book entitled The Exercise of the Kingdom for the Building of the Church and are included in this volume under the same title. 4. Twenty-two meetings for fellowship with the serving ones in the Living Stream Ministry office in Anaheim, California, on March 27 through December 11. Brother Lee's speaking in these meetings was informally published as nineteen individual messages under the general title Fellowship with Serving Ones. These chapters are included in this volume under the same title. 5. A message given during a time of fellowship with college students in Costa Mesa, California, on April 6. The edited message was divided into two chapters, which are included in this volume under the title Bearing the Testimony of Jesus by Living a Crucified Life in Resurrection. 6. A message given during a time of fellowship with leading brothers in Orange County, California, on April 15. This message is included in this volume under the title The Lord's Recovery of His Testimony. 7. Five messages given in Anaheim, California, on April 16 through May 21. These messages were previously published in a book entitled Basic Training and are included in this volume under the same title. 8. Twenty-three messages given in Boston, Massachusetts, and Anaheim, California, on May 1 through June 25. These messages were previously published in a book entitled The Experience of Christ and are included in this volume under the same title. 9. Twenty-three messages given in Boston, Massachusetts, on May 1 through 12. They were consolidated into nineteen chapters and are included in this volume under the title The Present Need among the Churches in the Lord's Recovery.

Evaluating the writings of one of the most significant religious figures in early modern England, this volume summarizes Owen's life, explores his various intellectual, literary and political contexts, and considers his roles as a preacher, administrator, polemicist and theologian. It explores the importance of Owen, reviews the state of scholarship and suggests new avenues for research. The first part of the volume offers brand-new assessments of Owen's intellectual formation, pastoral ministry, educational reform at Oxford, political connections in the Cromwellian revolution, support of nonconformity during the Restoration, interaction with the scientific revolution and understanding of philosophy. The second part of the volume considers Owen's prolific literary output. A cross-section of well-known and frequently neglected works are reviewed and situated in their historical and theological contexts. The volume concludes by evaluating ways that Owen scholarship can benefit historians, theologians, biblical scholars, ministers and Christian readers.

"Forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press towards the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus."--Phil. 3:13, 14.My Dear Sister,Ever since the death of our dear mother, I have felt a deep interest in your welfare. And your being left, while young, in a measure dependent upon me, has increased my affection for you. You have now left my roof, to sojourn among strangers. You have little knowledge of the world, and your religious experience has been short. I trust, therefore, you will cordially receive a few hints from one whose fraternal affection has been strengthened by many peculiar circumstances, and who, for many years, has not ceased to remember you in his prayers.Young Christians, when they first obtain peace and comfort in Christ, are prone to think the struggle over, the victory won. But nothing can be farther from the truth. They have but just enlisted under the banner of the great Captain of their salvation, in a warfare which will never cease till they shall have obtained the final victory over sin and death, and entered into the joy of their Lord. This mistake often leads them to be satisfied with what they have already experienced, and to cease that constant inward strife and earnestness, which they exercised while under conviction, before they found "joy and peace in believing." They see such a heavenly sweetness in divine things, that they think it impossible they should "lose the relish all their days." This begets self-confidence, and they trust in their own strength to keep where they are, instead of eagerly pressing forward, in the strength of Christ, after higher attainments. The consequence is, they soon lose their lively sense of divine things, backslide from God, and become cold and barren in their religious affections. A little child, when it first begins to walk, is safe while it keeps hold of the hand of its mother, or faithful nurse. But, when it begins to feel confident of its own strength, and lets go its hold, it soon totters and falls. So with the Christian. He is safe while he keeps a firm hold of Christ's hand. But the moment he attempts to walk alone, he stumbles and falls.
