Excerpt from A Hero and Some Other Folk The image was gold, which was, in fact, thin gilt. Achilles sulks in his tent, while Greek armies are thrown back defeated from the Trojan gates. In nothing is he admirable save that, when his pout ing fit is over and when he rushes into the battle, he has might, and overbears the force opposing him as a wave does some petty Obstacle. But no higher quality shines in his conquest. He is vain, brutal, and impervious to high motive. In jeneas one can find little attractive save his filial regard. He bears Anchises on his shoulders from toppling Troy; but his wanderings constitute an Odyssey Of commonplaces, or chance, or mean ness. NO one can doubt Virgil meant to create a hero of commanding proportions, though we, looking at him from this far remove, find him uninteresting, unheroic, and vulgar; and why the goddess should put herself out to allay tempests in his behalf, or why hostile deities should be dis turbed to tumble seas into turbulence for such a voyager, is a query. He merits neither their wrath nor their courtesy. I confess to liking heroes of the Old Norse mythology better. They, at least, did not cry nor grow voluble with words when Obstacles obstructed the march. They possess the merit of tremendous action. Eneas, in this regard, is the inferior Of Achilles. Excuse us from hero worship, if zeneas be hero. In this old company of heroes, Ulysses is. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from A Hero and Some Other Folk The hero is not a luxury, but a necessity. We can no more do without him than we can do without the sky. Every best man and woman is at heart a hero-worshiper. Emerson acutely remarks that all men admire Napoleon because he was themselves in possibility. They were in miniature what he was developed. For a like though nobler reason, all men love heroes. They are ourselves grown tall, puissant, victorious, and sprung into nobility, worth, service. The hero electrifies the world; he is the lightning of the soul, illuminating our sky, clarifying the air, making it thereby salubrious and delightful. What any elect spirit did, inures to the credit of us all. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Hero Folk of Ancient Britain The pictures and language are harmonized with the times: arms, dress, and domestic architecture present no anachronisms. Adhering to the principle of all editorial work heretofore done by me, the emphasis of these stories has been changed by simply laying stress upon the positive virtues of kindness to neighbors and love of king and country. For obvious reasons the latest addition to Tom Thumb, dating back to the sixteenth century, is entirely omitted, having no more right there than any vulgar tale would have if picked up to-day in bad company. Excerpt from Pawnee Hero Stories and Folk-Tales: With Notes on the Origin, Customs, and Character of the Pawnee People The Chief meditated for a while and then said, It is good and it is time. Already the old things are being lost, and those who knew the secrets are many of them dead. If we had known how to write, we would have put all these things down, and they would not have been forgotten, but we could not write, and these stories were handed down from one to another. The old men told their grandchildren, and they told their grandchildren, and so the secrets and the stories and the doings of long ago have been handed down. It may be that they have changed as they passed from father to son, and it is well that they should be put down, so that our children, when they are like the white people, can know What were their fathers' ways. Most of the material contained in this little book was collected on that visit. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Waifs and Strays of Celtic Tradition: Folk and Hero Tales The following Folk Tales, forming a volume by themselves, have been included in the series Of Wazfi and Strays of Celtic Tradition, through the kindness Of my friend, the Reverend D. Macinnes, who has made over the entire collection for this purpose. Efforts were made to secure the first nine tales Of this collection for the late John F. Campbell, Of lslay, but they were unsuccessful. When these Tales were narrated, as they were, without a hesitation in their recital, the narrator was in his seventy-fourth year. Like many others possessing fairy-lore, he has passed away within the last few years; and it is probable that before long the land will be ransacked in vain for the legendary folk-lore or for the fairy lore pure and simple with which it once was teeming. Fairy Tales From Folk Lore Classic Reprint written by Herschel Williams and has been published by Forgotten Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-01-25 with categories.

Herschel Williams selected these twelve fairy tales from a great geographic range, mostly from across Europe, with two from North America and one from Japan. The tone of this story book is gentle and familiar, but without shying away from the occasionally gruesome details that make fairytales so enticing for younger readers. While many of the tropes are similar to the fairytales we are all familiar with from the Grimm brothers, with lots of events occurring in threes and forgotten younger siblings often turning out to have the wisdom, kindness or bravery their older siblings lack, these are a set of entirely different stories from around the world. The collective imagination of the various fairy tale tellers must have been limitless to create such a wide range of these magical stories. In the first of these stories, the Irish story Yellow Lily, the hero is a cocky young prince who loves to gamble, and is saved from a grisly fate by the eponymous Yellow Lily. Yellow Lily is a heroine who doesn't mind using her wits to lash the hero when he needs it, rather than a merely a meek story device. This story also contains the great tongue twister "Yellow Lily of Loch Lein," try saying that with your mouth full! Each of the other stories are at least as fascinating, such as the Scandinavian tale The Mysterious Prince which starts like Beauty And The Beast and ends very differently, or the Canadian The Goddess Of Light, which reads like a cross between Bluebeard and a creation myth. Princes, princesses, elves and giants all abound in these stories, and the evil ones are guaranteed to get their comeuppance.
