Excerpt from A History of English Literature for Secondary Schools By an arrangement of type the book is adapted for various courses of study. It will probably be enough for beginners to keep to the larger type, and it may even be advisable for the teacher to restrict their studies to a selection of the more important authors. In a book of this kind, involving the record of thou sands of facts, it is impossible that perfect accuracy can at once, if at last, be attained. It is as accurate, s0'far as it goes, as I have been able by a considerable amount of reading and study to make it. I shall be thankful to receive notes of correction, and any suggestions that I may be favored with will be carefully considered. In its preparation I have necessarily been indebted to many writers. Where my obligations are so manifold and various, it would be invidious to particularize them; but I cannot avoid expressing my indebtedness, direct or indirect, to the professorial teaching and published work of Professor Masson, of Edinburgh. Whatever of merit the book contains is largely due to him; the faults are my own. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Not illustrated. 1894 edition. Excerpt: ... from the french revolution to the present time. The range is over more than a century, and extends from the middle of the reign of George iii. to the fifty-eighth year of the reign of Victoria. The succession of sovereigns in the period is as follows: George iii., George iv., William iv., and Victoria. The chief events in British history, affecting more or less directly the literary growth of the period, are here presented as they occurred in the successive reigns: --Reign of George iii., 1760- 1789-1820.--Trial of Warren Hastings, lasting seven years, from 1788. War with France, more or less continuously from 1793 to 1815: Naval victories--battle of "The First of June," Cape St Vincent, Camperdown, The Nile, The Baltic, Trafalgar (with death of Nelson); Land victories--(in India) over Tippoo Sahib and his French auxiliaries; (in Ireland) over the "United Irishmen" and their French auxiliaries; (in the Peninsula, at Corunna, Talavera, Albuera, Salamanca, &c.) over the French; and final overthrow of Napoleon at Waterloo by Wellington. Union of Great Britain and Ireland, in 1800. Riots in England after the peace--the Peterloo Massacre of 1819. Note.--At the time of the French Revolution England was prosperous, and by the use of inventions of machinery had become a great manufacturing country. During the war, in spite of heavy taxation to maintain it, trade and commerce flourished; after the war came commercial panics, and misery to the poor: corn was dear, work scarce, and there was great political discontent in the country. Reign of George iv., 1820-1830.--The Cato Street Conspiracy. The Bill of Pains and Pena

Excerpt from The Teaching of English Literature in Secondary Schools Mr. Guthkelch's originality and accurate scholar ship would have produced a very different kind of book, and the chapters which follow can have little or nothing to offer to the trained teacher of literature but there are many who, without special training, have to teach literature as a subsidiary subject, and to them these hints and suggestions of method may be useful. My aim has been practical guidance, rather than origin ality. Doubtless the results of my own reading will be found imbedded in what I have here written, and for this I need make no apology; I have not, however, consulted for this present purpose, nor consciously drawn upon any books of reference or histories of literature. Excerpt from A School History English Literature, Vol. 2 The plan of the book is to deal separately with the lives and works of the greater writers, -and to group in classes those of lesser note and importance. An attempt has been made throughout to indicate the relations of the writers to their forerunners, to their own times, and to their successors. Excerpt from American Literature: For Secondary Schools Teachers of English are fairly well agreed that most of the time spent in literary study should be devoted to literature itself, rather than to history, biography, or second-hand criticism. Yet many, and it seems to me an increasing number, feel that the student needs a brief general survey to aid him in grouping and correlating scattered facts, and to show things in their right propor tions. This is especially true in American literature, where, if anywhere, the American student should corre late literary history with other history, and should see that American authors reflect in their writings national life. Excerpt from A School History of English Literature, Vol. 1: Chaucer to Marlowe T is a wise thing, before we plunge Into any new study, to try and give ourselves some account of what it is that we mean by it, and what it is that we expect from it. And therefore an historical sketch of English literature opens rightly with a consideration of the nature and the value of literature in general. What can books do for us? And in what spirit ought we to read them P - those are the preliminary questions which we must ask. And the answers which we shall find to them may perhaps help to assure us that we are not following a vain quest, on a track that leads no whither, and may furnish some ideas that, if kept steadily in mind, will serve as guides and sign-posts throughout the journey.
