Excerpt from A History of English Romanticism in the Eighteenth Century Historians of French and German literature are accustomed to set off a period, or a division of their subject, and entitle it Romanticism or the Romantic School. Writers of English literary history, While recognizing the importance of Eng land's share in this great movement in European letters, have not generally accorded it a place by itself in the arrangement of their subject-matter, but have treated it cursively, as a tendency present in the work of individual authors; and have maintained a simple chronological division of eras into the Georgian, the Victorian, etc. The reason of this is perhaps to be found in the fact that, although Romanticism be gan earlier in England than on the Continent and lent quite as much as it borrowed in the international exchange of literary commodities, the native move ment was more gradual and scattered. It never reached so compact a shape, or came so definitely to a head, as in Germany and France. There never was precisely a romantic school or an all-pervading romantic fashion in England. Excerpt from The Beginnings of the English Romantic Movement: A Study in Eighteenth Century Literature Taking these three elements, Subjectivity, Picturesqueness, and Reaction, it is easy to see why the Romantic movement in England, in Germany, and in France, went for its inspiration back to the Middle Ages. Romanticism is certainly wider in connotation than Mediaevalism; and in the discussion of Eng lish Romanticism attempted in this book, the definitions of Heine and Madame de Stael would have to be supplemented and amplified to be adequate. But in the Middle Age lay just the material for which the Romantic Spirit yearned. Its religious, military and social life and all forms of mediaeval art can hardly be better characterized than by the word Picturesque; and souls weary of form and finish, of dead perfection, of faultily faultless monotony, naturally sought the opposite of all this in the literature and thought of the Middle Ages. And as the Classical Augustans had neglected this period above all others, and treated it with contempt, the Reactionists began with an attempt to revivify and brighten this forgotten Mediaeval life. Henry Augustin Beers (1847-1926) was an author, literary historian, poet, and professor at Yale University. Beers practiced law and worked as tutor before joining the Yale Department of English in 1875, where he produced numerous works, including scholarly studies of literature, volumes of poetry, and biographies. He is probably best known for his works on the historical development of literature. His works include: Nathaniel Parker Willis (1885), From Chaucer to Tennyson (1890), A Short History of American Literature (1906) and The Two Twilights (1917).
